Mafs get dirty ,normally in cars which have the oil breather pipe in the air supply tube.In some cases cleaning it will resolve the problems, assuming the air-measuring filament is not broken.

Hvae a look here.

The codes i was getting were P135 and P170, taught it was the 02 sensor but since cleaning the MAF sensor both went away!!

something u guys dont know, is that vw, audi and bmw all use the same bosch sensors... so u can go get a maf sensor from vw for a 2000 or better vr6 and it'll work fine on ur x5... i just put a r32 on my x5 and i missed the feeling of being able to rip the car without it sputtering... but now its good to go... just gotta clear the service engine soon light and make sure it doesn't pop back up... and im good
