Noise when Idling

Anyone else have this issue. When the car is idling or at a stop light you can here a noise or humming from the engine. However when you turn off the fan for air it stops.Seems unusally loud that you can hear this noise in the cabin.Do all of you have this noise or is mine just particularily bad and should I have it checked?

Ha-ha. I thought this was a problem as well. I heard a surging sound coming from the car when the fan was blowing. Took it to my Bimmer tech and he said it is totally normal. He did add, now if you hear the noise when the fan isn't on...there is a problem.

So, you're fine.

I have the same noise too, but for some weird reason, I don't remember hearing it in the summer as much as in the winter. I forget, does the AC affect this noise?

probably don't hear the fan running over the compressor.

So this noise is normal. That seems amazing because it seems pretty noisy unless you have the radio on.All x5's have it no matter what year.

I just had that noise fixed. It drove me crazy. About half the time when I would start the X5, I would hear a fluctuating high pitch noise coming from the fan. I suppose it's was the Auto Climate control or whatever that makes the heater fan start when I start the engine. I always have to turn it off after I start. I've had it set at 75, on low, on both sides for the last month. Now that you've read my story, here is the solution that worked for me:

I called the dealer to complain (because it's CPO'd, I complain about every little thing). They took it for the day and told me it was the AC that needed to be charged! That sounded crazy to me since I haven't even used the AC yet (no need to in New Jersey yet), and the temp was always on 75. Anyway, they charged the AC, and that stopped the fluctuating noise!!!

Good luck with yours.

My noise is constant whether you have heat on or the air conditioner on or just economy. It is when that air fan is on that you hear that fluctuating noise.

I never tried the AC for the noise, but about 50% of the time that the fan was on, I heard the noise. No fan on, no noise. My auto climate was just on 75 and not touched. I just always turned the fan off right away (unless my wife was in the X5, then I always heard "I'm cold", but that's a different NOISE completely).

So I should take it to the dealer and tell them to charge the A/C
