4.8is OIL DIY same as 4.4?

I was reading the DIY on OIL change and saw that they have the 4.4 and 3.0 DIY. Can it be safe to assume that the 4.8is would be the same as that of the 4.4? I'm looking to change the OIL soon without any prior experience, but ratehr take my time and do it right myself...

I also read on the DIY's the matter of replacing the "o" rings? What is that and where would I find it. I plan on picking up the oil at my local BMW Stealer. They seem to actually offer it cheaper than auto stores.

BUMP!

I tried searching but I get confused. Is the X5 4.4. same engine as 4.8? I thought the 4.8 engine was the same as the 550 and 750 sedans. Which is why they're desgnated x50 .

I'm planning on buying my supplies this weekend to take a good peek undermy car to see. But this would be my first time...

My 4.8is has adjustable air susp. Would it be safe to assume that the would could be done with a creeper on the raised setting.

If I remember correctly, it is the same. As for the creeper, Not sure if there would be enough room, but even if there was, I'm not a big fan of getting under any vehicle without jackstands....

No. Never get underneath a raised vehicle unless the vehicle is physically blocked up. Jackstands are cheap, get two.

JoyRiide,
It's a little tight and not real comfy, but I can slide my
6' 1", 210 #, old bod in and under for an oil dump.

Keep your head down and go easy, but unless you have
a 48" chest or a 44" belly, you ought to fit. Not fun
under there, but slightly easier than jacking it and putting
jack stands in place, just for an oil dump.

The "oil ring" you referred to is prob. the rubber O ring that
comes with a new filter. It goes on the oil filter holddown
cap, as shown in Hayaku's DIY pics, #30.

It's not a difficult job; just a bit of a PIA the first time
due to "room" constraints and messiness of those qts and
qts and qts gushing out the freakin drain hole: the oil
wants to go everywhere but in your 10 qt+ pan, lol!

Be careful and GL,
mD

mD, I think it's a tougher job for his 4.4 since the filter itself is also under the car. He needs to follow TQ's DIY instead of Hayaku's.

I raised the vehicle last night and noticed that even with the vehicle raised, it looked extremely crampped... What do you guys opinion on ramps? I was at the store and saw some ramps. Would it be smart to still use jackstands along with?

dkl,
Sorry, I forgot that the V8s have the filter below...

Joyride: I've never used ramps, though they are
appealing...every ramp "site" I've read always has
the disclaimer to use jack stands with ramps, though
the jack stands will have to be about 3 feet tall to do
any supporting.

I have slud under a lot of cars with jack stands, and
I've sludded under cars sitting on their wheels, but not
sure I'd slide under ramps...dunno.

If I had to ramp the X to change the oil, I'd prob.
toss in the towel and let the stlr or privateer or
quick oil change do it; it's a freaking oil change.
GL and be careful.

Why in the first place you want to change the oil yourself on your 4.8? Unless the warranty has expired. My dealer changed oil for free when it was at 6k, although its scheduled to be at 15k intervals.

In the DIY's it says

"- Heavy Duty Jack + Jack Stands OR Wheel Ramps "

I got the idea from my neighbor who was telling me it would be the same thing, but a LOT easier. Any reason why it wouldf be a bad idea.

For the longest time I have never let the dealer do any maintenance work on my car. I have always taken it to an independant shop or done it with a friend (who own a lift). I prefer to make sure its done right. Even if it is JUST oil.
