dead pixels problem

Hello,

I am curious to see how many people have had problems with dead pixels on bmw displays. My air conditioning control unit has several dead pixels, and now the radio head unit is starting as well.

I have contacted BMW canada, and they are refusing to do anything since my x5 is not under warranty - it's a 2001. I do not want to pay $960+tax to replace the unit only to have it happen again. Does anybody know who manufactures these lcd panels?

I'm wondering if anybody has had similar issues and how they resolved them.

Doesn't BMW Canada replace clusters with dead pixels for free? I thought I had heard that somewhere...

No luck with BMW Canada

Here is what BMW Canada responded to me with:

Thank you for contacting BMW Canada regarding the vehicle mentioned above.

We are sorry to learn that your ownership experience has not been without incident. BMW Canada has not followed BMW NA’s position to offer post-warranty financial assistance to repair MID units in BMW vehicles. When a concern arises following the expiration of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, BMW Canada evaluates each situation on a case by case basis. We have reviewed your concern and due to the age of your X5 3.0i, it is outside the period of consideration for assistance.

It has always been BMW’s objective to provide durable and reliable vehicles, which will require a minimum of service and not only meet, but exceed our customers’ expectations. As well, there comes a time in every vehicle’s life cycle when the manufacturer responsibility ceases and the vehicle becomes the sole responsibility of the owner. We respectfully submit that this is the case as it relates to this current issue.

We value the opportunity to respond to your inquiry. We regret that a more favorable response is not possible and hope you continue to remain a valued BMW customer.

Sincerely yours,

Customer Service
BMW Canada

This has been an on-going issue but it's like talking to a brick wall. BMW Canada will not accept any responsibility whatsoever if the vehicle is out of the new car warranty. Even the CPO warranty will not cover it. We have tried to argue that BMW N.A. has offered to replace the defective clusters, but BMW Canada says they are a separate subsidy and will not have the same coverage as the U.S. They claim the Canadian vehicles are made to different standards! The only difference in the cluster is mi/hr and km/hr ...otherwise they are the same unit!

Anyhow I have burnt out pixels in my 540 and I'm actually sending it out today to 'Cluster Repair' in California. I think they charge approx $200 to fix it with a one year warranty.

I didn't think that BMWNA (US) would even entertain requests to get them fixed - I thought only Canada would do it in the first place?

I have the same problem with dead pixels in my cluster. When I pointed this out to my stealer, they said that they couldn't send it back to BMWNA b/c I had install chrome rings. Go figure....

Needless to say, they didn't get the sale when I bought an e92.

Both of my prior E39 BMW's and now my X5 have cluster pixels burnt out. I'll send this one to VDORepair (dotcom) to be fixed. Factory replacements don't end up working very long but VDORepair uses better parts which have yet to disappear.
