I also think it's lucky that you have a diesel and didn't have an exhaust
not quite... the exhausts on the diesel are actually there, right behind the bumper; the difference being that the tips face down; hence not seen.

bottom line is no one was hurt; BMW = 1, Toyota = 1.

I echo what everyone's said. Glad no one was hurt. Timing is everything. By the way, if you need a replacement bumper, check out eBay. There are always 3 - 4 auctions on there with bumpers, probably being sold by people who upgraded to the 4.6is/4.8is version.

first off, glad no one was hurt.

regarding damage to your X: You say that you were parked right? you absolutely need to get the transmission checked, specifically the "park pin" or whatever BMW calls the lock mechanism that engages when the car is put in Park. The rear end might have absorbed the shock, but so did the transmission and the drive train.

Thats good advice I'll get the panel shop to check it. I've been driving it every day and have not noticed any probs with the drive train. Looking back at the impact scene, the other driver lifted my back corner like a wedge more that a direct shunt.

Cheers,

i was just about to ask about the transmission, agreed, make sure that gets checked ...

glad to hear all parties involved are safe and sound ... as my parents always remind me, "Marc, as long as the only loss is physical damage or loss to a car and not your health and well being, we couldn't care less."

Example: when that guy hit-n-run'd my Dad's Porsche a few weeks ago, my Dad took it better than I did: he kinda shrugged and was like "who cares, at least you and your friend are fine."

so yes, thank god everyone is fine ... that said, damned impressive how well the x5 looks.

However, that reminds me: doesn't the front of ALL cars smash up more than the rears? E.g., show me an X5 involved in a frontal accidnet -- I wonder how much ITS front smashes up?
