starter motor broken

My x5, 2004 3.0d, was brought in for service the other day and I complained about hard starting. Initially, we thought that it was the battery but upon examination, the dealer called me up and it was traced to the starter. The problem is within the bendix whatever that is. Now, the dealer is charging me 500usd for the starter. Is it really this expensive?

Same thing happened to my 3.0d 6 months ago (2004 model), it was replaced under warranty without a quibble.

Shouldn't that be in warranty still?

Warranty differs from country to country.

The warranty here is 2 years. I got my X5 november 14 2004. I brought the car in November 15 2006 . So technically , the warranty is expired but hey! I'm in the philippines. Everything can be manipulated.

Maybe this is a factory defect? All our other cars never had such problem. Including our 12 yr old corolla hehe

I went to pic my my x from the dealer today. They told me the starter will be coming in next week. And the best part is, IT'S UNDER WARRANTY. WEEEEE

Also had my engine bay detailed. I'll take some pics later. it's sparking clean.

BMW have a warranty extension on an annual basis: if you are quick (and want to spend the $$$$) you can take it up as long as you are within 4 weeks of the expiry of the original 2 year factory warranty
