CV Boot Question
Hi, ive been on for about a year ,but never posted. I love this site. My question is ive noticed when my passenger side CV boot was torn that same week ive been noticing a clicking in the streering wheel when turning. Its a very small click being felt. Is this the cause of CV shaft failure, Its been 3 weeks now and the click is the same, im going to replace the boot this weekend.

You MAY need a CV joint. As far as I know that means a new/recon shaft assembly.

Would there be any other reasons for a small clicking in the steering wheel when turning, or is this a normal consequence of a failing CV shaft?

Is the clicking from the steering wheel shaft area or the drive shaft area? If you drove for a while with the CV open to the wilds then the ingress of dirt could have taken out the CV joint. Usually the click will be most noticeable turning as you accelerate and will vary with speed.
It's not easy to troubleshoot over the internet.

250/$300 is the approximate cost to have them replaced by a shop. A DIY is way cheaper no doubt.
I recently had to replace my front passenger CV boot after replacing the driver side within 2 months. It's not cheap to have an X5 but as a member of X5World, I am more comfortable owning this car because I know there are members out there who can help me enjoy this expensive piece of machinery with tips on general maintenance and DIY steps. I love my X and I love this site!!!! |

The best way i can describe the issue is i can feel a click in the steering wheel (if that makes any sense), but do not hear anything. It happen the same week as my torn boot. Its a small sensation on the steering wheel, when turning. I am hoping it is nothing in the rack. Thanks for all the info.
