I bought an X5 4.4 a year later only because I wanted the extra 2" of width to make it more comfortable for carrying three in the back. As far as fit and finish and quality of the interior, I don't think there's any appreciable difference other than a wood center console versus plastic, in fact, the finished quality rating from the Magna Steyr plant in Austria that builds the X3 is the highest rated in Europe.

Interesting comment you make, cookie07. There are lots of guys around here who shell out $60K for a new X3 when they could have bought a pre-owned X5 for $25K less. Why do you think that is? Probably because they care more about how the truck drives versus the statement it makes (or purports to make) about how much money they can afford to spend on it.

...not an X5 hater; I own and like both and each is good in its own way, but I like driving the X3 more.

ditto here. i test drove an X3 and an X5 back to back first, and preferred the handling, size, and features of the X3 better. i then took my husband to the dealership and had him test drive both as well, and he had the same conclusion. price was not a major issue - it simply came down to which vehicle handled better and met my needs. particularly important was access to the cargo area for my great dane - the X5's split tailgate and increased height made this an issue. one of the dealerships i visited was kind enough to let me bring my dane to see how he did getting in, and the X3 worked out best. and he has enough room to lie down comfortably, so it's perfect.

i do like the X5's and, if i needed a second SUV, i'd get one. but my husband gets the second car and chose an '07 nissan frontier king cab for hauling gear for his motorcycle racing addiction. if he's ever done with that, it will be my turn to get a dedicated track car...

I've driven both owned the X5 and test drove the X3 both diesels.

As I see it on the looks front the new revised X5 looks much more like the X3.

The point is though why would you want to own either a X5 or a X3 when there far better SAV vehicles out there.

Excellent post. I do think BMW is onto something with the X3. Overall I like the vehicle. I must admit I do not love the styling direction of any of the newest generation BMW's.

Good to have you around B&D! :xoutpost:
Is it me or does the 2007 X5 no longer look "bulky"? I was at the $tlr yesterday with my X5 and while I was waiting, I took a walk past a row of what I originally thought were X3's - they were X5's! Even though they are wider and longer than the E53's, they look much smaller with the "rounded" styling. I have to agree, the styling direction of the newest gen Bimmers leave alot to be desired, but I need toys and can't seem to stop from buying them. My biggest complaint would be the over-comupterization of the handling - take the "soft-stop" feature on the 2007's for example. It's the most annoying trait of the car's handling - you have to keep your foot applying the accelerator even when going down hills or approaching a traffic light. It's the weirdest thing to get used to on the newer models. Anyway, X5 vs X3, they all have the beloved Roundel on the hood that we all know, love and adore!!!

This is analogous to debating which is better - a 550i vs. a 335i. A completely pointless debate. It's comes down to personal choice.

well said, i really like both...

this thread may be for laughs, but it's showing how arrogant X5 drivers are...

...please...for the sake of dignity and grace...stop hounding on X3 drivers...X3s are good cars, and every last bit of BMW as an X5
