Twice? What do you mean? Probably you replaced one side and then another side went. This is somewhat normal. On my cars when one side goes - I just replace both. They should last another 70k or so.

Only outer boots go. I have 540 with over 170k on original boots. Rear wheels don't turn and boots don't get stretched as much. Same for inner boots on front axles. They are not lokely to go at all.

If I do decide to keep the car, I'm tired of having to replace the rotors and brakepads so often, so if I go aftermarket rotors + pads, will it make a difference in durability?
My friend replaces brakes about every 25k miles. But this is automatic and he is driving in city. My car has first set of fronts replaced at 40 miles. It's manual.

This is heavy car with very good braking. Brakes replacement something to be expected. I would not go with aftermarket. But you can buy same brands as OE (ATE discs and Pagid pads) for much cheaper. ~$400 for all parts and it's about 1-1.5 hour job to replace them all.

When you consider the cost of repairs and the inconvieience leasing only costs a little bit more and I get to drive a new car every three years.

With regard to your hard luck, you may be better off sticking with it at this point. It sounds like you made a number of repairs that will yield many more miles. BMW's can go well beyond 100,000 miles.

Sorry to hear about your experience. I have a 2000 X5 4.4 with 69899 miles. I have replaced brakes 3 times and rotors twice - that's in almost 7 years. No major problems - except for window regualtors, radiator, dead pixels, outer front cv boots, fluids replaced, cp sensor and other minor things.

As x54.4 blue recommends - if you do all these repairs, your X5 will most likely last another 70-75 miles without major repairs. I remember some years back (although a different car) I put $3-4 K into my 325is and it has lasted almost 80,000 miles more without any problems - still going strong at 180,000 miles.

I would also look around for a better deal on mechanical repairs. STAY AWAY FROM THE STEALER!!!

my used 2001 is at 68,300 miles - it originally was a lease car for the 1st 36,000 miles - the 2nd owner only drove it <6,000 miles - I have to assume that the brakes and tires were replaced at the end of the lease, as tread and brakes are still good - (lots of interstate miles, though) - after the initial work I had done after just buying it in June,2005 (mostly for piece of mind), except for bulbs & sockets, I've had error free driving for the last 15 months - I did have the water pump replaced as preventative maintenance last April - Sorry to hear of your problems - I get the impression from members of this website that if you have problems, you have alot of problems; and then others of us are lucky to have very reliable rides.

Mine is almost out the door too. It has been in the shop 3 times in the last month for front-end problems. Those were under warranty. Now the thing hits 50175 and breaks down, leaving my wife stranded. This time it's the alternator. What next? Dealership is stepping up to the plate on this since I got it back last week and will replace alternator under warranty. Problem is I am without the car for another week or two plus $250 towing.

That's too bad; I'm worried since my car's warranty is running up soon.

NBX, 70k miles and three three brake jobs, that's a lot, you must drive in a city a lot.
I've done first brake jobs to my cars usually between 70k and 90k, but then again, at that time I didn't live in a metropolis with millions of people and terrible traffic jams in rush hour
