park means roll - tranny issue

so my x5 was dilivered today. the dome light was left on, so the battery was dead. when i tried to jump it, the beast wouldnt start. the dash was asking for code which i did not have. (2002 4.4) After some reading in the manual i disconected the battery and reconneced, then put the key in one click.(turn) it counted down from 10mins and when i turned the key completly it started right up. after a min or two all the dash lights returned to normal.( all the red and yellows were on)

this truck is sweet.

any how, i went to my brothers house and let him take her for a rip. we were in the drive way. i had the e-brake on and the rig was in park. When we realease the e-brake the truck started to roll down the driveway. (the shifter was in PARK!)

i think i may have shut the truck off while in neutral and then when i started it back up the tranny left itself in neutral instead of shifting into park. has this happened to anyone? the thing was in park and we were rolling down the drive way! little scary, doenst add up. i know the rig is electrically dependant and i might have confused it. i know it confused me.

-jim

p.s. this truck is sweet. (did i say that already?) oh, all you pic hounds can check my user gallery for pics.

note: i did search for this scenario occuring with someone else

Never heard of that one, but it sure sounds scary. You should see if you can reproduce the problem, but either way, I'd recommend having a dealer (or a good independent shop) check it out. GL & keep us posted on this one!

Sounds like something is wrong with the selector/switch. You should get it checked out soon (and keep using the handbrake).

With all the tranny issues on here I hope you have that checked out ASAP and since its a new truck (to you) I hope you have some type of warranty! Even a rebuilt tranny is $1000's!

This is just another reason why it is important to use the eBrake

e-brake is for drifting, not parking.

If that was serious...it was moronic.

Glad to see I'm not the only one that uses the parking brake even in an automatic transmission. My parents don't get it.

I know a lot of people that think "P" means everything is good.
