We can go back an forth on this subject. But the bottom line is that Jap cars are built well, and are reliable. The suspension of the X is one of the best out there. I'm sure Japs build a very good suspension, but lets not forget, BMW builds cars or Savs for much better handeling then your average Jap car. Jap cars are made more just to drive for everyday, BMWs are made for performance. Reliability in Bmw's is a little lower then Jap cars, but if you do the maintainance you need to do on the Bmw's, you outlast and out perform any Jap car, IMO...

i would never drive a BMW in the middle of no where, but I would my toyota. BMWs are great performance vehicles, with sucky ass reliability. I have yet to meet a single BWM owner who had no visits to the dealer for issues. I have a 2003 4runner that has never been back for anything. My M5 is in the shop 2 times a month at minimum. Granted, most problems are electronic. I never had this issue with my 700 series 1997 model. It was rock solid. BMW is taking the route of Audi in the reliability department.

the only thing i ever knew that was bad on the X was the front control arms.... but i believe that BMW engineered a new control arm after a year or so. I don't remember exactly but there were a ton of X5's that came in for front control arms, most of them were being replaced before the cars' first oil change....

my post was to the original thread starter...

but to answer your question, yes i'm very well aware of toyota/honda suspension and can certainly qualify my statements... my special interest is in suspension dynamics and making things go faster (to the point of taking them apart just to measure angles, dimensions, weight, deflection, etc)...

highlander and crv are uni-body designs based on cars. If you want to compare, use 4runner or land cruiser as examples. I can tell you that the 4runner is one tough truck.

What he work on? Unimogs? My X5 rides like a dream, and we're talking a 5000lb vehicle. I can't remember any postings concerning the suspension in the last 2yrs. And this is the place you would hear it first.

Everytime i get my x5 serviced and checked the guy (servies all cars) always complements how much better the x5 is built compaired to the ML and the Lexus and most other 4wd's. He was also telling me that he makes repairs on around 3 ML's every day they may be softer but the build quality isnt good. The onlything i have ever had to do to my x5 since 2/10/2002 was get a new front axel because it was leaking oil or something like that.

I would stay away from Nissan IMO, I have seen a lot of my friends with Nissans have issues and my 350Z had some things on it that needed help.
