2001 X5 4.4 Stalling.... Additive and Mixture error codes PLEASE HELP!!!

Hi guys, I have a 2001 4.4 and I'm having massive problems with it. The "SES" light is on and the computer produces 4 codes:

1)Additive mixture adaptation, bank 1 control limit reach
2)Additive mixture adaptation, bank 2 control limit reach
3)Multiplication mixture adaptation, bank 1 control limit reach
4)Multiplication mixture adaptation, bank 2 control limit reach

The car stalls when I just start it and sometimes it takes a couple of tries to get it started and idiling. Sometimes it idles pretty rough and then it goes away. Also the car stalls when im driving, usually when I break and come to a complete stop.

At first i thought the problem was with the Air Mass Flow sensor, so i bought one on ebay and changed it. The "SES" came off, but after about 5 miles worth of driving, it came back on and the problem was worse than ever. It's possible that the Air Mass Flow sensor is bad, but I'm not sure. Please give me some advice and share your knowledge, becuase I can really use the help.

Thanks a lot in advance.

No, most likely the issue has nothing to do with O2 sensors. If there was a problem with O2 sensors, then the computer would definetly show it.

Those symptoms are synonymous to a vacuum leak in the intake. A vacuum leak anywhere after the MAF sensor will cause a lean condition, of which the O2 Sensors recognize and compensate for by adding more Fuel to richen the mixture. This will max out adaption values in the computer and set fault codes.

I know the 3.0 X5's have intake boot failures, and I'm fairly certain you have the same issue with your 4.4.

Absolutly!!!
Check the air tube going from the mass meter to the intake. If you, or anyone, has been under the hood it can get easily knocked off. Also check you vacumm lines all over the top of the engine.

Check the throttle assembly, most likely it is the throttle assembly malfunction. It is very easy to replace a new throttle assembly. I had the same problem twice before, the dealer checked it and replace teh throttle assembly two time for me, everything backed to normal.

Also, clean your MAF. I was chasing those codes thinking it was a vacuum leak somewhere too. As soon as I cleaned my MAF all the problems dissapeared. Since it takes about 5 minutes to do, I would always put it at the top of the list...

hi, I had same problem with 740i, the crankcase vent oil separator diaphragm leaks causing intake manifold to suck oil through vent pipe. problem only when engine has cooled, although it may blow smoke from exhaust occasionally. To test ,get expert to use light pressure vaccum gauge in place of oil filler cap, or, run car warm and remove oil filler cap, take care not to injure yourself on cooling fan, no loose clothing that could catch fan, oil cap will be difficult to remove if excessive vaccum is present. alternative test- engine off- remove oil filler cap, get expert to place palm of hand over filler hole,-note-if wearing rubber glove-it could get sucked into engine, start engine, if vaccum is excessive it will be strong suction. The oil separator is located on rear of intake manifold. there is a repair manual available from auto-repair-manuals.com published by bently publishers.com The test is shown on back cover and repair is shown in fuel injection section, I do hope that information is helpful.

Solved

SOLVED

2003 V8 4.4L M62TU E53 X5

at 155,000 miles

I had a similar problem.

The Check Engine light (SES) went on and the X5 started to stumble, I pulled off the road while playing with the throttle to keep it alive and pulled over.

Car died. I restarted it once and then had it towed home.

I checked the codes with my 'Creator C310' OBD2 Diagnostic Scanner Tool for BMW, Multi-System Code Reader.

and got
Multiplication mixture adaptation, bank 1, control limit reach
Multiplication mixture adaptation, bank 2. control limit reach

I erased the codes, and then started the car, it idled for 2 seconds and then it died again.

After researching the internet and forums I went down the path of vacuum leaks and possible dirty or faulty MAF sensor.
In both cases that was not the cause. I checked all vacuum lines the best I could and I even replaced the intake MAF sensor with a brand new one.

It still wouldn't start.

I checked the fuel pressure at the rail using pen on the schrader valve attached to the fuel rail and had little to no fuel pressure, even after I had turned the key. At this point I suspect the fuel pump. I was able to check power to the fuel pump using my scan tool and still had no fuel pressure at the rail.

I took it to an independent BMW shop in Burbank, Bavarian Built Auto.

They where able to activate the fuel pump with their scan tool and confirm low fuel pressure at the rail with a fuel pressure gauge. The pump was barely working.

They put a complete new Fuel pump assembly unit in it with new fuel pump and the car was fixed. Car runs stronger than before.

Parts
BMW Fuel Pump and Sender Assembly - Delphi 16116755043 FG1230

Hope this helps someone trying to find a solution to their no start

Multiplication mixture adaptation, bank 1, control limit reach
Multiplication mixture adaptation, bank 2. control limit reach
Problem.
