You are right!!Practical has nothing to do it !Sorry,I gave the wrong excuse!
The problem is that I have been asking my dealer to get the rear bumper protection since June 2005 and they have been unable to get it since this is USA catalogue part nr.only,so its not available over here, but they were still going to try and get it thru other Bmw channels.
I had forgotten all about it until today when this thread was resurrected and after reading the remarks rendering it impractical since the opened lower tail gate does cover the bumper after my long wait,I tended to agree!
Practical aside,I do agree with you that it does break up the rear and it goes well with the colour of the underbumper. It looks good on yours and if they finally can get me one ,I think it will compliment the rear of my green X5 as well.
I wanted my 1000th post to be different,so here it is.!

I'm with Statdoc on this. Seems to me those mentioning functionality also have running boards, which is about as non-functional a piece of eye-candy there is. And yes I did add the bumper protection as I don't usually lower the tailgate and I now won't worry about resting something on the bumper and scratching the paint.

You can't get it off eBay like I did? I admit I have never looked at the UK or Portugese versions of eBay, but surely one could be on there. If not, I would be willing to buy it for you in the USA, and ship it to you, if you are willing to pay the costs, including shipping.

Point taken! Again it comes down to a matter of perspective and what You want.

I partially agree with you especially this bumper strip is just a thin rubberized sheet ... BUT why I did it was that on numerous occassions, when my wife goes shopping at the warehouse such as COSTCO, she does not put down the tail gate for loading and uses the bumper to support boxes she takes out from the shopping cart. I suspect this bumper strip has helped and minimized various scuff marks on the painted bumper whenever that happens.

So, it has its value IMHO
