When I bought my X a year ago it got about 19mpg with me watching my foot on the throttle. Now, 30,000 miles later it is 18.6mpg roughly. So I would say a range of 17-20mpg is about right for the X5 4.4.

I get around 21-23 MPG around town or 30-32 on the motorway(freeway)
