Thanks!

You just helped out a bunch of people thanks for the info! One of the most surprisingly easy things to do to save a bunch of cash is to do your own brakes. There are several good "how to" videos on YouTube. BavAuto has a very good one and there parts are cheap, that's where I got mine. And for those who may not know I'll repeat the, perhaps, obvious. There is a an "eye" hole to look through your caliper to check the wear on the pad and to get specific you could measure it. But most mechanics eyeball it unless it is obvious in need of changing. So, for those wondering how much time you have until you HAVE to change your brakes after the sensor comes on, just pull your tire off and look for yourself. But at that point, you may as well change your brake pads while your at it, because your basically half way done already!

The sensors may be a one time use item but I've used them more than once and they work fine, as long as you replace them before the light comes on. They cost about $25.00 at the stealership. My 2003 X5 has one in front, one in the rear.

I just did all four rotors and pads for a whopping $260 and $8.00 of that was for a 6 pack of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale that I consumed while doing the job. The first rotor + pads took an hour (because I was cleaning all the dirty parts) the other three took less than 1/2 hour each.
Thanks man. I just bought my 2004 X5 last week and the light just came on. Damn dealer!!! Anyway, I'm a DIYer on the minor stuff like brakes so it's no biggie. Just that its frikkin cold outside....figures. I see it's going to cost a pretty penny to maintain this vehicle, but I kinda expected it. I had an Audi before.

OE sensors or copies? Aftermarket sensors are infamous for problems

If the sensors are good it is likely the connections at the junction box

Before you get carried away on sensor checking, you can just put a paper clip in each connector in place of the sensor. If you can reset brake light on the dash, then you know you are dealing with bad sensor or connection at the plug. Can then narrow down which ( front or back), and take it from there.

So, the check brake linings gone. Rear brake pads, sensor and rotors was replaced and now the car run like a champ again.

Here's the reason of "CHECK BREAK LININGS" on:

The sensor has the circuit open, see the pics before (new) and after (used)

NEW:

USED (if you don't change it, your warning "CBL" will never turn off)

OLD PADS:

OLD x NEW PADS:

REAR PADS PART NUMBER (FA91, E53, 4.8is 2005/2006, Germany)

OLD x NEW

NEW ROTOR, PAD and SENSOR:

After have all set replaced, follow the sequence above like cvboot said:
  1. OPEN THE DRIVERS DOOR - LEAVE IT OPEN
  2. TURN THE KEY TO POSITION 2
  3. WAIT FOR THE LIGHT TO GO OUT (10 seconds and gone)
Thank's for this great topic!

i can't believe you guys change the rotors with each set of pads! i replace like 4-5 sets before i refurbish the rotors (if i have shaking on braking) for another couple of pads
dont' tell me you flush your brake fluid every 2 years? cause for me, it's a life time fluid...

and guess what? it still drives nice...
