How to know which transfer case I have

I lost my transfer case the other day and am ordering a rebuilt one from transfercases.com. They state that they only have the NV125 in stock. Is there a way to check the model of my transfer case without dropping it. Also, what other model case is there and is the NV125 a newer better version. I have a X5 4.4 2001 sport. I would like to order then drop.

Also, while I'm down there, should I do anything else other than the drvie shaft? Gonna get my hands dirty might as well go all in.

One more thing, anyone have expericance with transfercases.com? any bad ones?

Thanks guys! Oh, I have a good connection for 4.4L water cooled factory rebuilt bosch alternators. Paid $350 for mine with core. Let me know if anyone needs the contact info. Thanks,

hmmm....yes, there's a tag on the T case, not easy to read, but with a cool engine and a flashlight you can get to it. I have a 2000, and I simply bought the chain for $127. then $400 labor. and done, a good shop should be able to do this for you before a whole new Tcase. Talk to Cobra transmissions, I have dealt with them many times. (cobratransmission.com) I have 136k miles on mine, and with the new chain all problems gone!

thanks bdriven. I have a grinding noise and the x5 wont move. Is this the same issue that the chain resolves. I thought it would be the splines being striped on the drive shaft and in the transfer case. Parton my ignorance on this. Is there a diagram of the interior of the transfer case showing the chain. I am having a friend do the work.

Thanks again. Every piece of advise saves a dollar in the wallet.

No problem at all. In my case, the x5 did move, but would make that grinding noise as well, like a chain skipping teeth. Of course there's a chance the gears are worn, but it's worth it to look at them before, like I said, the new chain, solved my problem. Now, should you need gears, they're hard to find, but they're out there. again, call cobra, they're cool about parts, and won't push you for a new Tcase.

Wow this sounds just like my dad's RangeRover, same issue and he did the chain and all was well. (No grind, but skipping teeth for sure.)

Weasel will become famous soon enough
That is a common problem, and it is usually not the chain (at least from what I've seen at the dealer in the last 4 years). And 9 out of 10 times it has been the splines at the front shaft output stripped. There likely was water ingress to the splines, causing rust which eats them up to that failure point. I'm not sure if someone can dig up a source of a new shaft, other than robbing one out of a junkyard trucks case. At the dealer, we usually end up selling them a new case and shaft... But my suggestion to you would be to remove the front drive shaft and inspect the splines on both parts. The shaft is removed by taking it loose at the front guibo joint (rubber flex joint, six 18mm bolts/nuts) and slipping it off of the splines. You also need to remove the aluminum stiffening plate to access the front of the shaft, which is six 16mm bolts with nuts on the top. No matter what, when it comes to re-assembly... MAKE SURE you use a healthy dose of either anti-seize or a thick axle/bearing grease on those splines. Hope this helps you!

Thanks. I was debating replacing the case or buying the chain and replacing. I was running the risk of taking it apart and finding it was just that, the splines. Since I did not have the exact symptoms of the others here where the truck still moved but instead not moving at all just grinding.

This was the exact same symptom as the RR so thats why I was leaning toward the replacing. I located a rebuilt transfer case for $900 shipped so could not pass that up. Either way it will work in both circumstances just a $400 or so gamble. should have it down by the end of the week and will let all of you guys know.

I found the thread (thanks supersteve!) that also shows how to reset the trans software. I think what caused the damage was the transmission would kick into all gears when cold quite hard so in the back of my mind, I knew something like this was bound to happen.

Thanks again guys. Would not know what to do without X5 world sometimes
