I've successfully changed out my trans fluid to Dexron VI and I've had no problems for over 40k miles. All Dexron VI fluid is synthetic, regardless of who's label or brand name is on the bottle. But all 5L40E transmissions are now recommended to use Dexron VI. Much easier to obtain than the Texaco fluid that was recommended before and less expensive when you flush out your fluid.

Hi Charlie, yesterday I was in Walmart getting some oil. I was looking at the ATF and the Walmart Brand has a DEX VI. Priced the same as Merc V and more money than their base product @ $3.49 or so. Does that mean that walmart Dex vI can be used in the X5? That doesn't mean I will but. $4.29 is better than $9.00 for M1. What do you all think?

I'm also going to ask this over at bitog.

I've never tried the Walmart label Dex VI, but if its really Dex VI in there, you should be fine.

I used the Dex VI from the GM dealer on my last fill. I went through 3 different transmission fluids over a span of 40K miles. First it was Valvoline Max Life ATF, then Valvoline Dex VI, and now GM Dex VI. I honestly cant say I felt any difference between the 3, but I spent just under 6 bucks a bottle for any of the transmission fluids I used. For out transmissions, I dont see the need for mobil 1 when Dex VI is what the dealer suggests and it is already a synthetic fluid.

That's good to know. I only used M! because I thought it was the only one that was synthetic. Next time I'll use another dexvi. Maybe even the Super Tech... you live and learn all the time.

IMO, stick with at least a reputable manufacturer for your fluids.....Unless you are positive super tech is legit.

Good advice, But I am curious how the walmart would work. Why don't you try it for your next change and get back to us with a report.

Just Kidding, I'm going to bring this up at BITOG, see waht the responses are.

Well research on BITOG yielded a buyer-beware- cation. look here: lawsuit by API against Warren and others for faking the API logo and selling inferior oil under that logo, how sad, API Sues Motor Oil Marketers Over Trademarks Usage
