i was going to trade in my X this xmas, but decided not too, as i dont know how much more the car market will fall, so i thought id rather spend a few thousand doing up the car
![]() Probably the best time would have been around when the new model came out, after that its been downhill for the expensive car market.... over here in the UK i can get £8000 for sure! I was looking at a RRS, which is £25k easily, but if the market gets worse, which in the UK it will, that car will be worth maybe £20k, so i thought i'd rather wait and see |

For a 2004 4.4, probably somewhere around 20K.

17,600 is the Manheim price for an "average" 2005 X5 4.4 (67000 miles)...last week's auction.

I have a 2000 4.4 with 100k miles now that I got in 2003 with 40k on it. I paid it full at the time. If I was selling it now the money I would get for it would be so low that I don't even dare thinking about it. I had all sort of issues between 60k and 85k miles that were all fixed under the extended warranty (steering rack, CV joints, cooling circuit, control arms, valve cover gaskets, etc...) but now the car has been problem free for the last 15k. I made a choice some years ago to keep it rather than trading it and I am glad I did. It is still in very good condition inside, outside and mechanically. Getting a similar car new would request me to shade at least $40k. Getting a similar car used with less mileage would request me to spend between $20k and $25k without knowing what could break. I have 2 other cars and two motorcycles so I do not put a lot of miles on the X anymore. I am planning to keep it for few more years except if I get a major problem like for example if the tranny goes south.

I had planned on keeping this car at least 4 years. Bought extended warranty (5 years 100k miles, 100 deductible) but I was laid off in January and still no job. The economy and job market is forcing my hand on this one. I want to find a 2000 to 2003 BMW 325 so at least I can stay in the Bimmer family but have cash to tide me over. There is nothing easy about what is the best route and selling it may not be for me. But I need to consider all options and if it's too much of a loss then I'll hang on!

Sorry to hear about your job situation 4MoJoe. If I were you I would sale the X and buy a cheap American brand car until you get a job and recover and only then go back to the Bimmer family if that is what you want. Beside the purchase price a Bimmer or foreign car will likely cost you more to maintain than a American brand car. In your current situation a better car can always wait. I almost went that way at the beginning of the year after going thru a costly divorce and big alimony to pay on top of my daughter's college expenses still to pay. I bought a used Ford Ranger pickup truck cheap to run and maintain and was about to sale the X and 323. I was fortunate enough to have a good and well paid job though and thanks to pretty severe downsizing in my everyday expenses I was able to recover pretty well in the the following 8 months or so. In the meantime I put the old truck back in shape myself (changed brakes, brake line, master cylinder, fixed the A/C, etc...) and I use it now as my everyday car. Price for parts for the Ford were a fraction of what it would have been for the Bimmers plus it is easier to work on so I could do everything myself which was the plan. Thanks to this I was able to keep the X and 323. Not lecturing you here, just sharing my experience. Again I wish you the best in finding a new job.

Wow, I would think you could get more than that on the private market...depending on how quick you need to sell of course. If times are getting hard, sell and hop into an 04-06 Accord. You will probably never have to worry about a major repair, and they do a damn good job at holding their value - unlike the American brands. Believe me, I'm hurting because of it right now
