Who makes the OEM is also easy, no one! The company is no longer in existance... My shop foreman had that style that you're looking at on his E53 when he had it, was a piece of shit. That one does NOT mimic the OEM hitch at all! The OEM hitch replaces the bumper support and braces itself into the frame, the one you are looking at just bolts to a thin crossmember between the frame rails, with an arm that shoots forward and braces against the rear subframe. After towing his fishing boat with it a couple of times it was twisting the frame and pointing at a downward angle. That is the worse of the aftermarket designs...

Since I can't get an OEM hitch, in the same boat as the rest of us... I spent less money than that and got a hitch thats a little beter and is closer to mimicing the OEM hitch. But I plan on doing a little metal fab work and replicating the internal braces that the OEM hitch use to spread the load into the frame. Here's the one I got, and where I got it from. Shipping was fast too. And out of the box pictures are possible since I haven't installed it yet.

I'd get the OEM - on another SUV several years ago I got a hitch that wasn't cheap but not exactly the spec - I inadvertently overloaded the tongue weight once by about 30% or so- bent the frame where the hitch was mounted.

Overloading could do that to an OEM obviously.

After 2 years the paint started to flake off as well.

Bottom line, a BMW engineer signed off on the OEM version. That actually means something to me. I learned my lesson with the previous hitch.

The safety factor with a hitch is paramount - that BMW engineer (assuming of course they follow that process) designed the part while taking into consideration multiple variables about the X.

For me (I am considering a hitch next year so I can tow a car trailer) cutting corners here isn't worth the gamble. Bottom line for me is don’t overload, distribute the weight according to the trailer and X instructions and get the best equipment for the job or the right tool for the job.

Though your quad and trailer together weigh substantially more than the tongue weight that the OEM hitch allows, remember that the weight is also distributed to the wheels of the trailer. So your total tongue wieght won't necessarily be the total of your trailer and quad.

if you need it get it. i have that model and aside from it having a bar that is lower than the suspension( forward attachment point) it works good. i had a rear end collision by a dewfuss with a commercial truck. the hitch did absorb all the crash and kept me out of the shop. i thought about cutting off the forward point but the crash changed my mind. harness is digital or something and needs to be BMW sourced ...somehow. Maryland allows no lights if you can see the vehicle unobstructed by the trailer

I can confirm the trailer lights module to be available for order at any dealer, but the harness was on backorder last I checked... I'd call the dealer and talk to the parts guys.

Definitely use the OEM trailer lights wiring if needed and DO NOT use the u-haul style piggyback harness. That would cause electrical problems and possible cost you a lamp module as the exterior lighting is controlled by a module and is not an average 12 volt system. Besides, the oem setup does the extra little things like tell the DSC that there's a trailer back there so it can keep an extra eye on the stability control, it also turns off the rear PDC when the trailers on there, etc.
