the same happens with my 06 E53 from time to time even i have the oil full and newly changed... i suspect a sensor fault because i see that oil sensor available on eBay so this means that this part always gets faulty...but not sure....

There is a known issue with oil pump non-return valve on v8 engines. You should check technical bulletin B110905.

Since I bought my X5 about 3 months ago, I assumed the dealer had given her an oil change. It's been on 5 bars on the oil level indicator on start up. I've driven the X5 for a little more than 2,000 miles already and it's still on the same 5 bars oil level indicator. Is this ok???....

Anyway... Just today I drove to New Jersey (1 hour drive) in the rain. Got to my sisters and all is well. As i'm about to leave (about 5-6 hours later), I start up the X5 and I got the message on the dash "Stop! Oil Press" then "Check engine oil Level". First time i've seen this before. Turned off the truck, then started her up. Never got the message again. Drove 1 hour home back to NY and everything seemed ok. Any thoughts???

ive replaced some of these sensors already, its usually just the oil pressure sensor. most failures occur on the m54 engines. although i have replaced 1 or 2 on n62 engines.

Any idea of the cost of an oil pressure sensor? Also, is it an easy DIY? Thanks for the reply...

I got the same code today... it happened right after a really bad rain storm. I went to start my 2003 4.4 and it started but wasn't idling well at all, rpms around 500 it sputtered for about 20 seconds, the dash light displayed "low oil press. stop engine" then about 5 seconds later the light went off and it was running fine. I checked the oil and it was right on the mark. Any idea why this happend!??

happened to me today, stoped engine, checked oil level and it was half on the dipstick. So topped her off with some 0W40 Mobil One and checked level again, and it was almost to MAX, and it went away in the next ignition cycle. Does topping off up to MAX cause any problem?

The same issue has started happening on my 03 4.4 and each time it happens immediately after starting. I get the Stop Engine Oil Press message. I shut the engine off and the display shows low oil or something to that effect. Wait a couple seconds and restart with no messages. Only seems to happen when cold out and have checked oil level and all is well.

Going to check out the SB B110905 previously posted.

This is an easy DIY fix. There is an oil pressure sensor on the filter housing that simply unthreads and needs to replaced on the M62 engines RealOEM.com BMW E53 X5 4.4i Lubrication system-Oil filter. I had this same problem occur on my M5 after I washed the engine. There were some early problems w/ the M60/M62 engines where people would drop their oilpans and notice the pump bolts were either only finger tight or had fallen out completely. I would imagine this issue has since been fixed in the newer M62TU's and N62's.

I found this on RealOEM.com BMW E53 X5 4.4i Cylinder Head Attached Parts - Part #13. On the M62's on the oil filter housing, but for you it appears it's on the block itself of your N62, which I've never done. I hope this is the issue and something that isn't terribly hard to get access to. Killcrap is a BMW tech, so I'd follow his advice above most others.

At least there is oil dipstick on this model for owner to quick check, on all newer BMW if this happens you better not just top it off. It happened on someone E90(faulty oil level gauge), initially the Servive adisor just keep topping it off, not sure the guy blew crankcase seal or not for having too much oil. Dealer tech find out the problem after draining the oil to be sure. Can't understnad BMW going with these no oil dipstick, run flat w/o spare etc...
