I finally caved in and paid $$$ to have the oil pan gasket replaced. That was definitely the culprit. That was back in February... It is now October and I have yet to see a single drop of oil.

However, ever since they did that work, I am having other issues with the vehicle. Anyway, at least the leak is finally gone... LOL
Approximately how much was it?
I am considering doing this job myself. I will need to purchase some tools like engine support bar and a pair of taller jackstands. Then I made a list of "While at there" replacement parts so the price tag is constantly increasing not to mention the time required which is premium because it's the wifes' car. Paying someone to do the job is still a viable option.
The third option is doing nothing and re-filling engine oil every week.
Damn BMW, it's so fun to work on it.

I am not this is mentioned yet, but whenever seeing oil on the sump, fix the OFH gasket first b/c:
- The OFH gasket ($5 item) is the likely culprit. I posted the DIY in forum.
- The OFH gasket usually leaks around 90K-100K or so. Oil pan gasket should not leak until 200K or so.

And OFH gasket job is 10x easier than oil pan gasket job!

This is exactly what happened to me: oil was all over the oil pan area.
Replaced the OFH gasket a while ago, now oil pan is nice and dry.

I can't remember exactly (I am trying to forget this one! LOL) but I think the Indy charged me $1200 for the oil pan gasket replacement.

Yeah the oil filter housing gasket does cause a major leak too. I had already done that repair before deciding to get the oil pan gasket replaced.

Revisiting too -- I have yet to replace the oil pan gasket... but inspect my valve cover gasket every month for leaks, since I'm about to run out of warranty on it. I know I need to replace the OP gasket, but damn... two quarts of oil every 2-3k miles is so much cheaper and less intrusive than lifting the engine and replacing the gasket. Maybe this winter when I have some down time... I need to replace the thermal resistor in my AC compressor as well.

Dealer just noticed some seepage on my oil pan as well, quoted $1500. Noted as 'not critical, address soon' though. Wondering if any indies in northern IL can do it for much less.

When does the check engine oil level warning get triggered? Mine just came on while driving, thankfully I was just a few miles from home. Two arrows came on the driver info screen, no other warning lights or indicators came on. Will check oil level in the morning and buy a couple of quarts to top off. It's been about 1200 miles since my oil change.

I've had the "check engine oil" warning come on as well. After putting a quart of oil in, the dipstick reads right about halfway up the oil level indicator. I've never had the actual oil light come on so I don't know when that happens. Maybe it's in the manual?

According to the tech at the Indy:

1. The low oil light is supposed to come on when 1 qt is left
2. There's only 1 qt (or less!) left when the dip stick is dry
3. The oil lever sensor goes bad quite often

Replacing the sensor is quite easy... It is accessible from under the vehicle, on the pan... You can't miss it.

I know this is resurrecting an old post, but I could not resist. I too have an E53 X5 3.0i MY01, that had the oil pan gasket blow. I know, could it have been the OFH, well, the only real way of testing is with a use of dye in the oil. The OFH did have a weeping leak, but definitely the OPG was the culprit. But low and behold, I also had the stupid high pressure power steering line leak from the mid-crimp on the hose and the low pressure return line of the power steering reservoir leak at the band crimp into the hard line. So to be sure this was going to cost me my home, my right leg and my first born. But luckily, I have a cool indy mechanic in my area and he charged me just $1K for all the work, plus taxes. Christ, I am glad I found him. Meanwhile, like our illustrious leader Bill Clinton, I feel your pain, when it comes to costs for stupid jobs like an oil pan gasket replacement. These Bimmers, I love, but sometimes, you gotta scratch your head when reviewing the way Germans think when they engineer something.
