He's right. BMW is pretty adamant about that in all their write-ups that I've seen. That is probably why they use such a hefty charger. They even recently upgraded the unit to accommodate some E65 specific requirements I believe. The charger runs close to $1000.

I talked to my indy mech and he said that the charger is usually not required for most stuff. He says all mfgrs/dealers do this as a precaution against voltage dipping for real long coding/programming - which he says is not often.

If your battery is good, you should be okay, he said. However, I'm gonna buy one in case I have to do something that takes more than 30 minutes. At least, he says I don't need a special charger - any will just about do. We'll see if I NEED a $1K charger.

The actual time it takes to do the actual coding/programming has been only 15-30 seconds so far. As far as I know, if the voltage dips during DIAGNOSIS, its not gonna kill anything.

I'm gonna check with several sources, including weasel, and see what others have to say. The stuff I've been doing so far I don't THINK I've been taking BIG chances but you never know. I'm gonna wait and see what others have to say.

I'll update when I find out more. Meanwhile, I'll keep that not e on the first post. Better to be overly cautious, especially with so many casual readers.

My mechanic did say that some OBD scanners can't work or have difficulty with some of the latest BMWs .. something about too much data/not enough throughput.

I guess thats why they have optical interfaces now .. lucky for me I have an OLD 2004!

I use Ricauto Service in Kensington, MD (301-933-7888). Talk to Henry .. He's great to deal with and is the boss.

Not too far away .. nice long stretch of highways there .. just watch out for cops under the overpass in the shade! Guess you would know better than me.
