If you search around, you'll find that OE replacement Brembo are not coated with any finishes, thus surface rust will form as soon as it touches water. I got the Zimmermann rotors (old stock) and its doing the same thing...it's just surface rust, so it doesn't bother me much. The newer Zimmermann rotors now have zinc coating sprayed on them to prevent such surface corrosion. I think the BMW OEM rotors are also treated with some type of coating, but they do still rust after a while. My suggestion is that either clean them, then paint the hat or look into buying Centric rotors, which already has their rotor hats painted. Or get the coated Zimmermann rotors, which cost the same, if not less than Brembo.

So I called Brembo customer service, "we haven't heard that our OE replacement rotors rusting, you'll have to call the retailer who you bought them from... blah blah blaaaah bullshit bullshit bullshit." Called autopartswarehouse.com "you must send them back and we will credit your account." Ya, that won't work, I'll have to pay a mechanic more $$ to remove and install new rotors. Next option, I'm going to order some VHT rust inhibiting paint, and get to work.

VHT Brake Caliper, Drum, and Rotor Paints - summitracing.com

Then I pushed to get some sort of a credit, and they'll give me back $30, not bad I guess, it is about 15% off when you think about it. I'll send an update when it's all finished, it may be a few weeks though. Just another fun little Friday night project lol

Isn't it unfortunate that brakes systems are still problematic even though disk brakes have been common for over 50 friggin years.

1. Brakes are still undersized on many vehicles, evidently to save $2 a car.

2. Rotors still rust and look terrible, even though they are displayed through big wheels.

3. Some designs required taking apart a whole bunch of stuff just to replace the brakes.

4. Brake dust is a real nuisance and could it be a health hazard? Would, say, a dishwasher manufacturer design one that left soap residue all over the exterior after every use? How stupid, and how inconsiderate. Again, it probably saves them a few cents in pad material costs.

5. Brakes weigh a ton. Man, are they heavy. Performance, gas mileage, braking, ride and handling, etc all suffer. You would think they would have done whatever R&D it takes to deal with all this.

Oh, sorry, I forgot: it is a profit center for them. Actually, a service manager told me he was worried about the new hybrids they were getting because their regenerative brake systems supposedly did away with routine brake work and that was a huge part of their business and bonuses.

End O' rant.

I probably didn't need to replace my rotors either, there was no vibration, no screech, just a "check brake linings" light. I replaced them, now I'm kind of bummed because my stock rotors looked pretty clean compared to the rusty Brembos.

I replaced my rotors and pads on all 4 corners last week, i replaced them all with oem bmw parts, i love how they look and stop compared to my old worn out ones. The oem rotors use a nice coating!
