Angry a/c problem help

.....Hi,

so, my A/C, sometimes it cools, sometimes it doesn't.
if it's really warm out, it'll probably never cool you,
if it's kinda cool outside, it'll freeze your butt.
also, when you first turn it on, STINKS!!!!!!
any ideas????

Thank you!!!!

Mario

For the stink it is usually caused by mold/milder/bacteria on the evaporator as it is alwasy wet while in use fron condensation. There are some products available that are like a lysol bug bomb to kill that, and that works great. As fr the cooling problem you need to have the pressures read and analyzed by someone who really knows AC systems. Is the electric fan in the front (behind the bumper) working when the AC is on high?

All most can tell you is to replace the condenser fan (in front of bumper) after having the coolant checked. I have searched for a way to test the fan before just replacing it but none seem to exist. The fan is around $400 plus labor if you cant do the work yourself.

If the pressure gets too low, high press switch will not engage the compressor and blow warm. So it may be approaching a lower pressure and thus it explains sometimes cool/sometimes hot. Take it to A/C place, have them check for leaks, etc....recharge it and chill down.

Haven't really fixed this, they said the refrigerant was low, so now, it cools a bit more, but not much, and the fan sounds like a 747 about to fly up in the air. It seems that I need to replace the evaporator. As far as the stink, I read that you can make a hole on the evaporator housing (big black plastic container) and spray the evaporator directly, then plug the hole and good to go!

I am told a heater valve is a common problem in these. for mine, drivers side was colder than passenger.

The systems just don't go low by themselves... but hopefully you have either a very slow leak or an easy one to repair.

And Sprocket, cold on drivers side while warm on passengers is common symptom of low charge... you are probably in the same boat as petertn.

Agree with Weasel. If the system went low then there must be a leak somewhere. I was also loosing coolant over time and the AC would get less and less efficient. I recently spent some time inspecting the AC line and found out the culprit. The high pressure valve was leaking. When I unscrewed the plastic cap that covers the valve it just flew away from the pressure built up in it. I replaced the valve myself ($15 the part) and got the system recharged at an AC specialist for $150.
