Question about Wheel/Tire Sensor...

Ok... I have the 4.8is e53 and have been having problems with the Wheel Tire Sensor... About every 80-100 miles the warning light goes off. I have had it to the dealer 5 times for it and they haven't fixed it yet, even though they tell me they have each time...

I have read the the sensor on a 2006 is the FTM and it is wireless... Is it like bluetooth where it has to be paired to the vehicle? I think the guy I bought it from changed out the wheels and tires when he bought his 2008... So the sensor on my x5 might be one from a 2008... Don't know if that would make a difference, but I am trying to think of anything... I don't think the guys at the dealership can grab their A$$ with both hands... They are clueless...

Any suggestions on what I could suggest to the dealer to get it fixed? All they know how to do is push the reset button... I am not going to mention which dealer it is but they basically told me that they had no idea what it was and was going to leave it at that... I then asked them if I needed to take it to another dealer on the other side of town and the service manager didnt like that and kept my x5 for a week... Said it was fixed... Replaced a lot of other parts under the CPO.... 100 miles later... Tire light...

Now this is going to be trip #6 and I'm starting to get a little upset...

So if anyone has any suggestions, I will be very greatful...

Thanks in advance...

I have a 2006 4.8is as well. With the stock summer wheels and tires I have no problems, but I bought (from BMW$$$) winter tires and wheels (18 inch) and have a similar problem. In fact I blew the right rear snow tire on the freeway on Boxing day, and I still worry that it was because I got a series of tire warning lights, each of which i carefully checked (no air loss) except the last one, which I just overrode! There may also have been something nasty and sharp on the road (it was snowing heavily at the time).

So I don't know what the differences are. The dealer "reinitializes" the system when i take it in to them. and it is fine for a month, then on comes the warning light. With the summer (original wheels and tires) no issues. I wonder wat will happen when I change the tires next year....

The FTM does not have sensors in the wheels. It uses the ABS system speed sensors. Maybe one is going bad. I think someone posted the exact same question just yesterday.

I had a similar problem. I was driving over a one of the bridges that connect from where I live to Portland and the I get the warning light. I get off on the next exit, visually check the tires and check the pressure in them, no difference. Hop back in the car, reset the system and start driving again.

About a week later, I am driving over the exact same bridge and it goes off. I pull over again, check everything out and don't notice a single difference as last time.

So, I figure it has something to do with the bridge and maybe there is a dip or something in the road that is setting off the sensor. A week later, I walk out to the car and it has a flat! Fill the tire with some air and drive down to the local tire shop to get it patched.

I had a long thin nail stuck in the tire for sometime and it was slowly, very slowly loosing air. Whenever I would drive over the bridge, there were metal dividers on each section. I think that when I drove over it, it would jar the nail a little more until finally the leak became bigger. So, even though you don't think there is a leak in your tire, you may certainly have one.

1: if a wheel speed sensor was going bad there would be a DSC light.
2: some of the newer E53s had the RDC systems
3: the question to the OP would be Do you have metal valve stems or rubber ones?

Don't you mean some older E53's (prior to 4/2004) had the RDC systems.

reference post #16:
http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...monitor-2.html

BTW, that chart is interesting in that it states that Run Flat tires were 'optional' on the X5. As far as I know they only came on the E53 X5 security car (Summer/All-Season Tires: Goodyear Eagle RS-A *EMT (RSC) 255/55R18 109H M+S Extra Load. Winter Tires: Goodyear Ultra Grip 500 *EMT (RSC) 255/55R18 105H M+S) and BMW never spec'd any run flats on standard E53 X5 models.

Sure... do the research...... see if I care.

I forget that logical thinking doesn't always apply to the BMW world.

Usually?....................No.

I like to be illogically logical. (which is uncommonly common)
