The thread topic is if the E53 design is outdated. You're discussing iconic, timeless and museum design, the two topics are totally different.

When Chrysler pulled the trigger on green lighting the Viper production cars, the word from the CEO down was, show car, production car, SAME car. No coffee clutch focus groups or Chrysler committee groups. They would have put in a smaller engine (so automatic trans could be installed), larger trunk (this would have destroyed the proportions), electric windows/airbags/ABS/AC/outside door releases (added weight), removed the adjustable coilovers and forged wheels (reduced cost).

The car was built as a throwback to the Cobra SC, for hardcore drivers that wanted to drive the whole car, not however much car the software developers decided with "driver assist nanny system programming".

The show car, production car, same car directive came at a steep price, like production of the largest composite panel in the automotive industry (clamshell hood). In the late '90s these hoods were retailing for over $9000, ASC was unable to meet production demand, Viper production stopped (there were warehouses of completed cars without hood).

BMW focuses on producing high volume contemporary vehicles, not throwback designs.

Different looks for different folks.

The E53 esthetic is fine. The look is "timeless" classic.

The newer E70 X5 esthetic is also fine but no earth-shattering news..

To be honest it's quite a motivating thread, although it started rather moody
