i have driven the PanAmerican highway between Panama City and Managua. The road is OK, a few potholes in Panama (those are deadly, since the road in Panama generally much better than in Costa Rica, you drive faster, and a pothole gets your tires in a second. Ask me how I know)...
the road in CR is very treachorous, especially in Cierra de la Muerte, where you climb up to 10000 ft, drive in a permanent fog (which never dissipatates), and you really run a risk falling off the mountain. crossing border at Paso Canoas on the Panamian side is cool, but on the CR side, theŽll get you for bringing into the country anything (they tried it with me, but I have a dip plates and dip passport, so they HAD to let me go). Pena Blancas on the Nicaraguan border is OK, and again, youŽll need to look out for correct papers on the CR side, otherwise, theyŽll turn you back. They tried it twice with me, but again, my status helped me - and all my papers were good anyways... I have not tried the PanAmerican highway at any other places... I was told, that once it reaches the south border of Panama, there is nothing going to Colombia - but I have not been that far south... Oh, in Panama, there is a stretch between David and Panama City, where you WILL need to make sure you have a full tank of gas, as for several hours there will be NO gas stations... ahhh, the beauty of driving in Latin America... Only one BMW dealer for the whole Costa Rica. Same in Panama and Nicaragua... There are virtually no bimmers in Nicaragua, I mean, there are some of course... but very few and between... More bimmers in CR and considerably more in Panama. Panama, as I have heard, was number one market for Porsche Cayenne... and it seems that they are everywhere... Generally, Panama looks more prosperous, then its neighbors, definetely due to the canal... Even though, the per capita there is less than in CR...

Off Topic
Well, since we are well off the original topic anyway, here is what Ruta 5 (The Panamerican Highway) looks like in northern Chile, in the Atacama desert. This would be one of those places that you need a full tank of fuel for. Also, after every decent trip your vehicle pretty much looks like the photos above. We did regular runs up to Iquique, near Peru, and throughout the region. Didn't have a BMW there; the main dealer was in Santiago, 1300 km away.
