Alright so mission accomplished finnally finished hahaha.

What I did to take out the MID after the torx was broken was I got a really thin and small flat head driver and I removed the climate control panel and stuck my hand up inside and basically unlocked the mechanism from the inside.

The climate control unit is held in by 2 screws on the top that are only accessible after removing the MID. How in the world did you do that?

I just took it out today to put in my DIY Aux cable. There are definitely 2 philips screws on top of the climate control - at least there is on my 2004 4.4. What year is yours?

edit: did you remove just the climate control face plate or the whole unit?

I have a 04 3.0 and and whole thing came out when I pried it with the flat head. U might be thinking of the vents on top of the cd player.

No, I'm not thinking of the vents or the CD player. Like I said, I took it out today so it's something I saw and did, not just think about. My concern is that others reading your post will try to pry it out and break something.

This is an excerpt from an article on Xoutpost: Installation of Icelink Plus to standard Business CD

STEP 3 CLIMATE CONTROL REMOVAL

There are two Phillips drive screws located on the upper portion of the climate control unit located within the dash.
Loosen the screws until they rotate freely.
Remove the Climate control unit. Do not disconnect as this is not required

NOw that you have the MID off, there should be two hex screws visible just beneath the CD/Tape unit, take those off and you should be able to pull the radio unit.see the Virgin X5 retrofit guide pdf file http://www.bmwmotorsports.org/pdf/nav/65%2011%20030.pdf
hope this helps....
