Yeah, I think I'll delete the 8 series link since they were speculating about a leak and really had nothing to back it up.

I would also replace the filter if you're going to drain and fill the tranny. All the old sediments that are left over cant help your new fluid much.

do not delete the 8 series link as we do not yet know for sure about the new fluid colour until somebody actually looks at stuff in a bmw workshop.
a tech i spoke with reckons there is some green / blue fluid for transmissions , he just did not bother looking to confirm .

i shall of course change the filter with fluid .
lot`s of great help and advice here and another thread called lazy mans tranny fluid maintenance , but i still would like confirmation on new fluid colour.

Did you see the link in post 7, that guy has a picture of the actual Esso fluid from the liter bottle. BMW is selling the same fluid (even in an Esso bottle rather than a 'BMW' branded bottle like they do with oil, coolant, brake fluid, etc.) just in a larger quantity. So I really think we have our answer. It's clear-yellow in color.

it may seem as though we have the answer but i would not guarantee that until i see the fluid relating to part number at bmw dealer .
the fluid in the link had vw/audi part number and my fluid is not very dirty compared to the used fluid in that link.
my fluid resembles Duckhams hypergrade motor oil , if you are old enough to remember that blue/ green oil .
there is a possibilty that the factory put additive in transmission so that could explain the colour.

I think there is some confusion going on . Either you are looking at the wrong link or you might think that the two pictures are from the same source (website) when they are not. The link where the guy changed the oil, he did it on a BMW and he used the Esso oil that comes in the 1 liter bottle (the exact same stuff that you can buy from bav auto); this oil is not labeled VW/Audi. The text with the Audi A8 info that also mentions the oil is from a completely different website. My only reason for including it is that it mentions the same Esso oil used by BMW and also describes the color of the oil.

So from the picture of the oil and the description of the oil is it clear to me that the oil is clear-yellow in color.

I would really doubt BMW added any additive to your oil.

For the record you might find it interesting to know that the oil used for the ZF gearbox (Shell M 1375.4) is also clear-yellow in color. See post # 54
