All right!!! Time for a water pump! yay I get to fix stuff!!!

Haha, Ok, so I've been looking on the site and looking at the water pump DIY and the pic set is dead. (I need pictures, cuz they are fun to lookz at and are coolzzz) So here are my questions:
How long did it take you guys to do the job? (Cuz it is a race ya know)
Did you guys use the BMW tool to get the pulley bolt off?
And if you didn't, what did you use as a substitute?

Let me know and thanks in advance.

Which engine you got? V8 if I'm guessing right?

The crank pulley that covers the bottom bolt is held on with 8 torx head bolts, just use a socket and ratchet, easy. Just be careful that the 2 metal pipes that go to the rear from the top of the waterpump disconnect only at the waterpump side, otherwise you have a fun time getting them back in with the possibility of torn o-rings that you can't easily get to. (I use a shot of penetrating lube at the front o-rings to help loosen them up before removing)

Also, if you have the water cooled alternator, get the black rubber coated pipe that goes from the pump to the alt as well, it is cheap and prone to leaking if not replaced with either component.

But from the sound of it you know your way around with the tools, and this shouldn't be too hard a task for ya.

You got it. It's a 01" 4.4i. Completely unnecessary but i need to ball out. haha! Anyways, ok. That sounds easy enough. I just needed to know if it was critical to have that tool. But hey, its got to be easier than doin a timing belt on a 93 Vigor right? And if anyone knows what I am talking about, well then, you know! Any tips or tricks to get the suckers apart? i.e breaker bars, 20' of metal conduit attached to the breaker bar and then one good push? Don't ask me how I used that as an example. haha. Any other input, always great and thank you Weasel!

i always seem to have trouble getting the mech fan off. to hold the pulley i use a loooooooooooong screw driver. (on the order of 2 feet to wedge between a couple of the bolts on the pully. (thats if putting the wrench on and giving it a quick wack with the hammer doesnt work)

added: the screw driver is square shaft not round, as the round will just slip.

No need for the oversized breaker bar on this crank pulley, the belt part of the pulley comes off seperately from the balancer part. Just forget about the big main center bolt and go for the ring of 8 torx head bolts, nothing easier! Just make note of the alignment pin when putting it back on.

But you're right, this is easier than just about any DOHC V6 timing belt.

Oh yeah to add to what Tony just said, reverse thread on the fan clutch. And I do find that a long flat blade wedged on the left side of the pulley paired with the long 32mm wrench on the clutch bolt is usually enough to break it free, I do have the crows foot wrench w/bar for my air hammer for the stubborn ones.

Hey Weasel, try a SOCH i-5. OMG you wanna talk about tight? The bay was tighter than virgin goin to prom. Ok bad example, anyways but yeah. Everyone said this was a two person Job. Especially when taking off the 297 ft/lb pulley bolt. Needed a hand to hold the breaker and another to wrap on the nut. So i was smart, plus down a man. Lifted the car, inserted the breaker bar, and lowered the car back to the floor and let the bar rest on the floor. Got my 20' steel conduit ( 1 3/4" to be exact) dropped it on my other 1/2" break and viola, loose pulley bolt. And I didn't even need to take the radiator out, yayayyyyyyy!!! hahaha.

uhg so on a side note, after everyone asked me to take pictures, well I did tonight. Took the BMW, Mercedes and Acura out to the car wash, and brought them back for some nice pics... Then the Mercedes started acting up (Bad Alt, Christmas tree lights on the dash and car goes into LIMP Mode) reversed that somf bitch back to the house doin 2 mph and on >200 RPM wanna talk about fun? Whoooo Hooo, more stuff to fix, I love it! But its still under warranty so I'll let Benz take it (Boooooo) But I get a free detail, yayyyy!!! haha. Yeah I know a little too hyper. Runnin around all day. Enjoy the pics in a new post! (Oh yeah, and ITS ALL YOUR FAULTS THAT MY BENZ IS BROKEDEDDDD) HAHA Just kiddin! But seriously! lol

I'm posting this everywhere after breaking a bolt by going the wrong direction (and I was tired, stupid, etc.)

Here it is:
One thing to note: My '01 X5 3.0i with MANUAL transmission has a hydraulic tensioner for the drive belt, and the bolt on the PULLEY is turned clockwise to relieve tension. I think the fact that mine is a manual may have something to do with the clockwise rotation because other folks have indicated CC. With the hydraulic tensioner, look at which way the thing has to move to compress the piston, and apply torque to make it happen. No impacts, by the way, just leverage. <-- From the BMW tech.

Thanks

Still trying to figure out why you pulled the whole crank pulley via the 420 NM center bolt vs the ring of 8 torx bolts that are there just for jobs like that... But glad you got it done!

Weasel,
You're not talking about the Vigor, right? The Vigor's pulley only has the one bolt if I remember correctly.
