Seriously...No need to argue here...

You have to pay to play! Is a Ferarri as reliable as a Civic? No...As cheap to maintain? No.

But I still want one. A Civic is a great car, but no tin can for me. I expect to pay more, have glitches, etc.

Absolutely agree and well said. I think comparing an X5 to a civic is a bit silly. But comparing to a Pilot or MDX is certainly reasonable. And the honda's are certainly way more reliable, ride nice, have very comparable features, etc. I considering going that route myself. But in the end I decided it was worth it to drive a BMW instead - the way it drives, handles, the power, the fit and finish, interior materials and layout, etc etc. are all superior to the honda. Do I wish BMW could make their car as reliable as honda? Sure. But they don't. So in the end it is up to you as a consumer to decide. You have choices. For me it wasn't much of a choice and the BMW won out over reliability, fuel economy and space / utility. We each get to make that decision and there is no right or wrong answer - different for each person.

BTW - my X5 has 100K miles and has been very reliable. I also have an Audi with 80K miles that has been trouble free. And my wife drives a Mazda with 115K miles - also has been very trouble free. I prefer the Mazda to the honda in terms of driving enjoyment - it is tuned much more towards an enthusiast oriented driver, yet offers similar levels of reliability - at least when compared to german cars.

C4...Well said (as well)!

We just happen to have an 06' Pilot...My wife drives it. NOTHING like the X5. My wife is JEALOUS. The Pilot has been perfect with ZERO visits under warranty. My Titan I just sold had 122K miles on it. Again, other than a brake recall (X2), it was perfect.

But I would much rather drive my previous (2) M3's, the Viper I just sold and this new (to me) X5 any day of the week. Since I can afford to pay (or pay for the 100K CPO car in this case), I will take the trade-offs.

My X5 is delivered this weekend to me (had a previous one for 10 days the owner took back - long story) so it remains to be seen how reliable it is. I will post plenty on my experience. I can tell you the DRIVING experience is NO QUESTION.

Like C4 stated, make the decision that is right for YOU. No wrong or right answer!

Ya - I've had plenty of fun to drive cars and seriously - for me life is too short to compromise on what I drive. Within reason of course. But I am willing to pay for the experience. Every situation is different of course. In my case the X5 is a weekend and trip car and should see under 10K miles per year. If I were driving 15-20K miles per year, I might make different choices. But I enjoy having both a great daily driver and a great weekend trip car, so I am very happy with my current stable.

I have owned an M3, M5, 2 Corvettes, a CTSV, an Evo, and now the S4. Loved them all. Would an Accord serve the same purpose? You bet. Would it be cheaper to own? Duh. I am willing to pay more for the experience because owning nice fun to drive cars is a passion of mine. More than one friend of mine thinks I am totally nuts. Which might be the case, but that is another topic...

C4,

For your friend(s) that think you are nuts, there are also plenty that think like us! Life is too short!

I recently purchased a CPO 06 4.4. After all the issues i have read about i think i will be getting rid of it prior to the November 2012 CPO ending date ! I dont want to be holding the short end of the stick on a transmission, etc. replacement.
