My thoughts exactly.

I searched Autotrader nationwide and found several X5 4.4s with NAV and other options for less money but most are on the West Coast.

Would you believe that the local dealers have 2006 X5 3.0s on their lots priced at $34 to $35K.

Is this their pipe dream or are the local retail buyers idiots.

I just looked and looked...

A NICE one COULD be had for about $30K. I am a picky buyer...I like a 30K mile vehicle to look almost new.

I found many for sale (asking) in the high 20's, but they were far from perfect with no warranty.

A CPO 2006 4.4 is going for mid 30's with low mileage. This is a loaded model with NAV.

Example...I bought the cheapest low mileage 05 4.8is in the country (Autotrader, Cars.com, BMW, etc) at $29,000 with no warranty...Got it home...Come to find out after air bag suspension problems, thrust bushings, tires, etc. I would have over $32K into it...With no warranty. So it is going back to the owner.

Just spent $39K today for a 2006 4.8is 37K mile CPO's car (11 / 2012 out) in PERFECT condition. New tires, etc. Turn-key with no worries. Bought from BMW.

I was dealing with a broker and was looking at the auction prices from the last few weeks on 4.8is models...05-06 were SELLING at auction for $32-$36. These again were low mileage examples...AND with NO CPO. Then I would have to add shipping, warranty, etc. Now near $40K. Thus my purchase at $39K.

Just for kicks I looked up 2007 4.8i models LOADED with low mileage. $43-$45K+ SELLING at the auctions. Too much for me.

So...Not exactly sure what the 4.4i models were SELLING at auction, but I am SURE what the 4.8is models have been selling at.

You made a good choice, but $31K would not have been bad either since you knew the car well, it was taken care of, etc.

My .02 worth anyway since I just went through purchasing!

I think you made the right choice, until you run into your first repair on the Porsche.

I was in a dealership yesterday and they offered me $16,500 for my loaded 04 4.4i with 47k miles. Dealer said to me "Even though your car is low mileage, the problem is its a V8." I waited for his laugh, but it never came.

So I get past that point and let my anger subside, and went on to look at a 2010 X (on paper). I ask the guy "So I have a set of 17" rims on my 04 that have snows, can I mount them on the 2010." "No, the 17's won't fit, that car comes with 18" tires, and if you put 17" tires on the car, it will mess up the speedometer and other electronics." Again, waited for the laugh that never came.

"But I have been running 19s and 17s on my car for 6 years without a problem, and my 19" tire came with a 17" spare, do you want to see it? As long as the diameter is the same...." The blank stare was obviously going to precede a laugh, right?

Nothing. Once he told me that I was getting a great deal on a car that he would not be able to duplicate beyond yesterday (last day of the month), it was time to leave. Is $2,200 off stick a good deal on a $62,300 X5? I think not. I might be done with the brand.

Thanks for sharing your experience.
It sounds like you landed a great deal

I found a local broker who will search a car and then take you to the auction to check it out and purchase. The problem I have with auctions... dealers often dispose of problem cars at auction.
The broker said there was a guarantee...did not get the details about how that worked.

Yes buying my car, that had no issues, would have been the best option but not at $31K, no CPO and no special financing deals from BMW.

i would never buy a used X5 without CPO. Way too many issues that needed fixing. The premium for CPO on our 2005 e53 has been paid many times over in the last 3 yrs we've owned it. When this car hits 100k, it's gone. Its a great car, we love it but the number of issues even on the 3.0 I6 has been high. My 540i/6 on the other hand even with the v8 has been much more reliable.

Car salesman usually don't know anything about the car they are selling. I went to my dealer to check out an M3, the salesmen told me "these cars are custom built for special customers only" and that I should "totally check out the turbos on it"

I felt like slapping his face

After speaking with several BMW dealers I came to the same conclusion. The X5 is a great ride but the dealers and BMW need a reality check.

I researched aftermarket warranty programs...the problem with any of them is they don't cover repairs due to wear and tear. Dead in the water is about the only condition that is covered.

I set aside $$ to self insure the Cayenne.

I will let you know in a few years if this was a wise decision.

One dealer quoted $34K to CPO my car for 2 years and more miles than I would ever drive but that did not include new tires.

As a bonus BMW will finance at 5.9% for 3 years.

They have got to be kidding.

Also look out for some private sales, there are alot of people out there who have car they almost never drive. Case in point a relative of mine was able to get a 2004 Acura NSX with only 8,000 Miles
