my issue fixed by followign these steps..

1. With both keys, get in the car and close all windows and doors.

2. Put working key into the ignition and turn to position 1 (the accessories should turn on)

3. Turn the key back to position 0 and take the key out of the ignition.

4. Using the working key, hold down the unlock button, press the BMW logo (lock button) 3 times, and release the unlock button. Doors should lock and unlock.

5. With the new key, hold down the unlock button and press the BMW logo (lock button) 3 times and let go of the unlock button. Doors should lock and unlock and you're done!!

Anyone know where you can purchase a new key for E53 X5 (2003) in North America, apart from the local BMW dealer?

I only have one for my X5, and would like another for spare.

Dealer-only. I think mine was around $349.

This should explain why it's dealer-only. We have EWS III (electronic drive-away protection),

Ah, indeed it does.

Bummer, I'm sure it'll be some bucks to procure a 2nd key from the dealer then

Also, if you do end up at the dealer, make sure to tell them you want an ADDITIONAL key, not a replacement - otherwise all other keys are deactivated by EWS and become useless.
