Leaking X5 Coolant

Hey Guys,

Read a heap of posts and wanted to know if anyone has had the same problem as me.

I have a small drip of coolant each time i stop, did some investigating and have located the source....

Its coming from a small "hole" in the water pump casing, (not a crack the hole is meant to be there)

Has anyone had this same problem, does anyone know how to fix it?

Thanks,
Mason

That is the "weep hole". The only way coolant comes out of there is when the cooland is able to make it past the internal o-rings on the waterpump shaft, usually caused by some slack/movement in the bearings. Sorry to say, but you need a new waterpump.

The car keeps telling me to check my coolant level, when i check the reservoir is full?

Do the sensors often die?

Is the system bleed properly? (water stream pissing across fill cap opening with cap off and engine rpm at 3000 rpm?)

No the sensors don't ofter die but some of the pre-facelift X5s had an issue with the sensor on the bottom of the tank hitting the plastic mounting bracket for the expansion tank causing issues.

Thanks Weasel for your help.

I have just swapped the sensor from the expansion tank into the windscreen washer tank and the sensor is detecting water in there fine.

Do you know how these switches work, and what exactly was the issue with the pre-facelift. How did it get fixed.

I have already had to replace the expansion tank because it split about 9 months ago.

Your help is appreciated.

The plastic bracket the expansion tank mounts to has an updated part it can be replaced with if needed. You should check the wires going to the sensor on the exp. tank, make sure they didn't get damaged anywhere. Also make sure the sensor/plug isn't touching the bracket under it.
