Irritating Banging Noise from the Rear

Hi guys am beset with this irritating sound that comes from the rear cargo section when i hit gravel roads or when i brake or accelerate (which is like always)
It sounds like the upper or lower tail gate is not closed properly or that there is something loose that is hitting against the tail gates. I have properly fastened each and everything that needs to be fastened under the floor mat and ensured that the tail gates are properly shut but the sound persists. Has any of you experienced this or could you please point me in the right direction? Could it be coming from the under carriage of the car but sounding as though it is within the cabin?

I have a similar problem too. It's a clunk from the rear somewhere, not the classic and infamous rattle of the X5's tailgate. If you figure this out please let me know. This is very annoying

I had the same problem and it was driving me crazy. For a long time I was not able to figure out what it was. Finally I started being suspicious about the upper boot lid. If you open it, you can see black rubber stoppers, one on the left and one on the right side. I pulled them off and fitted 1mm metal washers inside them. It lifted the rubbers up a bit and mysterious banging was gone after that. Probably buying new rubbers would have helped as well.

Thanks Havi

Am now more than convinced that is what is wrong with my rear. when I lift the upper tail gate I do see the rubber stoppers with a screw next to each. How did you remove the rubber stoppers? Did u pry them off or do you use the screws to loosen then remove them? Also when you say the effect of the washers is to lift them do you mean push them outwards towards the screws or upwards to meet the upper tailgate latch sooner?

The rubber stoppers come right off when you pull them. No need to touch the screws. I think they get pushed down in time, so the idea of the washer is to move them back up a bit closer to tail gate. I used the washers because their center hole fits throuh the screws. Hope you get rid of these terrible sounds!
