Need Help! Thrown Belt.....

Ok, so my wife is driving home tonight and about a mile from our house, her '01 X5 3.0 starts making "transformer noises" and then lost power steering, starting smoking from under the hood, and struggled to run. She limped home as it started to overheat and then it dumped a large amount of coolant in the driveway.

When I got home, I started it- it started like normal but sounded pretty funny when running, then I pulled it into the garage after wrestling with it in the driveway to line it up without power steering. Now I have it in the garage and starting to tear into it and find that the belt is completely off the pulleys and not turning anything. I reached in and grabbed the fan to discover it moves around quit a bit- I'm guessing that is some type of anti-vibration design??? It turns...

There is some oil around the filter housing and that side of the engine, which I knew it had a small leak somewhere and just had not had time to locate it.

I'm not sure what is going on yet, but am looking for suggestions and advice. I am tearing into it right now to see what I find.

Please post any ideas, suggestions, tips, and magical solutions anyone might have...

thanks,
Skrach77

It was very bad of her to limp it home, so not to sound negative, but lets hope that didn't cause anything bad. You never mentioned how the belt looks...missing ribs, chunks, etc? The fan clutch shouldn't have any movement at all, so maybe that "transformer" noise was more like a jet taking off from the fan clutch seizing up, then throwing the belt due to all the force from the fan spinning around. It turns, but you need to check it with the belt on to make sure the clutch hasn't failed.

I just found another post of the same situation...

The bearing on the water pump is gone- which explains the wobble from the fan. I have it apart, fan clutch is working normal. Belt is in decent shape and could probably be reused, but I won't risk it since their cheap.

While I have it apart, I will go ahead and do the tstat (since I already have a new one that I haven't put in yet), new belts, water pump, and possibly the high power pulleys? Any other ideas? I also noticed there is a small oil leak around the oil filter housing, but have not found the source yet...

What else should I check while I'm in here?

Good job finding the problem. I kept throwing belts in my 7, ends up out of the 3 bolts holding on my power steering pump...1 was broken and 2 had almost completely backed out, so the pulley was sitting at a nice angle upwards and just slipping them right off. 3 Gatorbacks later and a pissed of Schucks store, I finally figured out it wasn't thier belts after all Sorry guys.

250.00? kind of steep for these ...no? And I am by no means an engineer, but by installing a smaller diameter crank shaft pulley, all accessories slow down to gain more power with less drag.......so my question is, how will that not affect anything negatively? Because I have to assume that BMW has done all the calculations as to, at what speed alternator and a/c must spin to work/feed the other components for longer and more efficiently? ......Honestly they sound nice, but I don't want to have the "Drag Race" car effect where after a short run you have to re-tune or change some parts that have burnt out by modifying something you shouldn't have. 30% of slowdown in accessories sounds a lot.

OP...you will most likely need either a new rad and/or new coolant hoses in addition to t-stat/water pump, etc.... Your wife overheated the X driving home. Rads blow quickly when that happens. Also not only your radiator may have blown. Check your oil. Pull out the stick and check for litle bubbles on it or other sign of water. Pull the oil fill cap off top of the motor and look if there is anything other than normal oil resedue on the other side of the cap.

Check all that before you put the new parts on. Trust me.

+1.

You might need a whole lot more than a water pump. You might need a new X5.
