Need Help! Thrown Belt.....
Ok, so my wife is driving home tonight and about a mile from our house, her '01 X5 3.0 starts making "transformer noises" and then lost power steering, starting smoking from under the hood, and struggled to run. She limped home as it started to overheat and then it dumped a large amount of coolant in the driveway.
When I got home, I started it- it started like normal but sounded pretty funny when running, then I pulled it into the garage after wrestling with it in the driveway to line it up without power steering. Now I have it in the garage and starting to tear into it and find that the belt is completely off the pulleys and not turning anything. I reached in and grabbed the fan to discover it moves around quit a bit- I'm guessing that is some type of anti-vibration design??? It turns...
There is some oil around the filter housing and that side of the engine, which I knew it had a small leak somewhere and just had not had time to locate it.
I'm not sure what is going on yet, but am looking for suggestions and advice. I am tearing into it right now to see what I find.
Please post any ideas, suggestions, tips, and magical solutions anyone might have...
thanks,
