Water Pump - 04 3.0i

I've just passed the 90k mile mark on my x5 and have decided to do a cooling system overhaul while i'm not showing any bad signs of overheating or failure.

Does anyone know if the water pump in the 2004 3.0i engine has the original plastic impellar or the updated metal impellar? If metal, would this prolong the life of the pump and extend the suggested replacement interval?

At that milage, I would replace it regardless if the impellar is metal or plastic since it isn't the only variable that can cause a water pump to fail. I'm planning on changing out mine in a year or two when the X5 (also an '04 3.0i) hits 75K or 80K.

My 2004 was some sort of composite (yes, plastic) material. Replaced it at 65k with a metal impellar one. Pretty easy to remove/replace.

Good luck,
Daniel

Change the belts while you're in there too

Did that, the t-stat, upper and lower radiator hoses, fan sensor, and cleaned up the engine bay. Only thing now is I have a squeal that sounds like it coming from the belt drive.

Probably leftover coolant around the pulleys. After any engine work (oil changes, coolant changes, etc), I normally hit the engine with some Simple Green and the water hose.

Good luck,
Daniel

Follow it up w/ a nice misting of ArmorAll to give it that showroom look. Keeps the rubber moist and looks awesome...just be prepared to wash the car afterwards from the overspray.

the composite one is more better than the metal one, the metal one fins will usually distort, and some do actually break off of the shaft like the Original Plastic Ones found in bmws before 1999. Reinstall the Composite one for god sakes.
