Rattle / Squeak / Wobble.....

Hi folks,

I am looking for some help with my 2001 X5 4.4i. Can anyone throw any light on these issues? Thanks in advance.....

1. Rattle - When I am sitting at the traffic lights or stopped anywhere with the car in "Drive" and my foot on the brake there is a distinct but light rattle sound coming from the engine, this goes away if I slip the car into neutral.

2. Squeak - When I go over the slightest bump in the road there is a loud squeak coming from the engine bay. The suspension and shocks seem fine.

3. Wheel Wobble - If I break hard I get a terrible wheel wobble on the front but if I brake softly it is not there. The discs do appear worn, could this be my problem?

Thanks again folks for any help you can give an X5 newbie......

Have you checked the condition and securityof all your engine mounts?

Tim,

Thanks for the response. They all look fine but I did hear someone mention bearings near the front struts?? Would that be right?

Hmmm.
Well there are bearings in the struts, they rotate as you turn the wheel left and right. If they are gone you will get more of a clicking/knocking sound. But who knows. With these things there's bearings and attachment points everywhere.
My first BMW, so I'm still a little astounded by how much mechanical and electrical stuff they have crammed in these things.

My second BMW, my last one was a 1998 535i V8, beautiful car and lots of fun to drive. I just got the X5 and I have to say I love it. They are a bit complicated but I think it's a small price to pay for the driving experience you get.

This might be futile but I'll throw it out there because I had the same symptom with respect to the engine bay squeak. Make sure your hood is closed properly. It may look closed but not fully engaged and you will get that squeak. I did. Let it drop from about 18 inches.

I know for a fact the wobble is that you need new rotors. mine wobbled like crazy once i changed them it was like a new car again. The wobble will go away but if it still has just a little bit then change your control arm thrust bushings. chances are they were damaged due to the rotors.

. That seems to be a common problem with the "wheel shaking at high speed braking"
