I used the turkey basting bulb, it's better (albeit messier) to drain the tank but so far for me no problem and my X is turning 8.5 years soon..

Also I suggest for eveyone to just call the dealer for proper PS fluid. I called 2 dealers and both told me to get any Dextron III for my 2002 4.4i since none of them even stock any PS fluid. Can't imagine putting wrong fluid in the tank.

I did the turkey baster method a few months back. But I used Royal Purple's Max ATF. I like their products, have them in both diffs, transfer case, transmission, oil, and power steering.

So... My power steerting pump is whining at me when it is cold and I turn the wheel. So I thought I better check the fluid. Found out it is not even touching the dip stick, I know total chick move. Either way, I just want to mnake sure that I am putting things where they need to go. The reservior behind the radiator is the one that I need to fill correct? The fluid that is in there currently is red which is obviously transmission fluid. Is that where I need to put more fluid into? Do X5's use the same fluid for both transmission and PS? Finally, is there any approved fluids that have a stop leak in it, or are those bad news? Thanks as always!

It looks very similar to the Castrol Multi-Import Vehicle fluid that I use in transmission fluid changes. I think using just about any Dexron III/IV type of ATF will in work just fine.

Just did mine Saturday with Amsoil Synthetic ATF (Dex/Mac III/IV). Can't believe how dark the old fluid was. I will do this again a couple of times in the course of this week.
