I did the job myself, and I can't see where it would cost as low as $300.00. The dealership quoted $550 in parts plus 4-5 hours labor. Now I know its a dealership, but the point is the new parts alone where $550 from the dealer. I did not have the new design on my X5. The only way i can see it costing less is if you have the new design and they just charge you to clean it out (no new parts).

The cost of the insulated valve, QTy 4 hoses and the new design single wall dipstick tube cost a total of $550.00 with the oil dipstick tube running just over $200.00. All parts from a dealer. I understand you can get probably cheaper on line but I was stuck and had 2 days to get it done, and dealer had parts in stock.

Is the estimate for parts and labor?

ekvals: thank you for sending us your estimate of repairs. Looks to be about US$2731 for what you have referenced here. Are all the parts on this estimate? BMW should cover parts for your repair, and you should only have to pay for labor charges. Of course, you will need to work with your service manager to obtain BMW's assistance, or call BMW directly. For labor only, I paid about US$1200 for the same work. Your country's taxes and labor rates must push the amount much higher.

How much of the entire estimate will you be responsible for paying?

ekvals..I know its too late sorry i didn't get back to you sooner..To answer your question. No it is not necessary to remove that intake manifold to do the job. Removing it does make it easier to get to though. I never removed mine.

I should state that the cost is for my X5 3.0 out of warranty.

Sorry, i did not see all your answers before i edited my post..

You can find some more info about the quote now....

The parts they have ordered for this job is

11617534237 Oil seperator
11157532628 Vent hose
11129070990 Valve cover gasket
11611436631 Gasket for intake manifold

And of course oil and filter.

This does not seem to add up to what BMW states should be replaced in their bulletine. Oil dipstick tube is missing as example..

The parts, without oil and filter, comes to about 416us

The labour is 1510, excluded the 2 hours for troubleshoting and oil change..

They have estimated 4,2 hours for dismantling the intake manifold, adding the gasket cost, the manifold work alone is 1032us..?
And if primetime replaced his parts without removing the intake manifold, the shop should be able to do it as well..?

Sequel95, i am def. are going to check with the shop if they can check this out for me... Wherever i can save some doh..

Yes ekvals the shop should be able to do it without removing the intake manifold. I suspect that they reccomend removal to make things easier on them while doing work on the seperator. many shops around here will say the same thing, that the removal of the manifold is necessary but in reality on your model X it is not necessary, BUT it does make it easier IF they do remove it... Hope this helps.

Hmmmm...

Just called another BMW shop here in Norway.

One in a bigger city and prob. more X5 experience.

He knew straight away what i was talking about, and set up a quote including the valve cover gasket.

He quoted me 1299 us.???

Adding the 762 dollers for troubleshooting and oil change makes it a total of 2061..

Thats about 700 bucks less..!!

A little update here...

Got the car back from the shop about a week ago.. They did the job without removing the intake manifold which actually saved me about 400 bucks..

However, today, the service engine light came on..

The car runs as usual, cant feel anything different.. Im pretty sure that the fuel cap has been properly screwed on...

Any suggestions.?

Take it back to the shop that did the work and have them pull the code for the service engine light. After I changes my oil separtor I threw a code because I had switch eletrical plugs for the water pump and fuel something. I had a code reader and with some help from Weasel I figured out what I had done wrong. But you need to know what is causing the light to come on so you can start looking.

BMWNA may fix it for you

Take a look at my post on this today - BMWNA may be fixing this if your X5 is under 100K. Take it in and tell them to send the request in...mine is at the dealership right now pending BMWNA approval....good luck
