After my 2004 4.4 75,000 miles X5 imploded this weekend, the dealer calls (who I like very much and has always been very very fair) and gives me this list.

Says there is a leak in an oil line from rust thru - says it's not a CPO warranty item quotes $650.00 +/-

The front driver door handle broken - new carrier etc - not covered under CPO warranty quotes 350.00 +/-

What's anyones opinion about the warranty coverage - I don't have the paperwork home - it's in the car. Prices seem sort of high but it is a BMW. I'm more surprised about the lack of CPO warranty coverage for the items.

If anyone has had any experience with coverage for these items, please share.

In my opinion, CPO warranties only cover big mechanical items. It's basically very, very limited. Even the extended warranty doesn't cover many items you would think would be fixed at no cost except the deductible. It also does NOT cover the front control arm bushings. I know this from having to replace them on our 3 BMW's, 2 of them under either CPO or extended BMW warranties.

FWIW, right after I purchased my 06 X5 4.8is, I noticed a 'vibration' coming from the front. Took it back. They replaced both front tires since they must replace them in pairs. A week later, the wife and I noticed a rattle with the left front strut unloaded (meaning you hit a bump, the strut is essentially up in the air and hits another pot hole and rattle...). They were kind enough to replace the left front strut under warranty and then the fun began with the self leveling going wacko. Seems both struts must be changed at the same time; in pairs. Problem now fixed. It cost me a whole $50 deductable. I can't complain.

I would press your case with the dealership. Also, read the CPO handbook very carefully and see if you can find any loopholes to help you. Good luck.

The list of what's covered/not covered, though I can dig out the fine print in the ref to the "The Certified Series Pre-Owned BMW Protection Plan Consumer Information Statement" or, the rusted oil line, vis a vis "damage due to rust, corrosion, or contamination, except as covered by the BMW New Vehicle Rust and Corrosion Perforation Warranty."

Surprised the dlr is holding you up so much on "no coverage", esp a rusted oil line, in 4 yrs, WTF? They must test these cars on the autobahn, (the parts with the speed limits), on A+ spring and fall days. CPO...hmm.
Good Luck on getting something covered. If the dlr keeps stone walling I would go find an indie in Orange or Rockland county, but I would really push it with that dlr.

First off, $1000 repair bill is pretty typical - get used to it with the higher miles. Secondly, if they are not going to cover under warranty, I am sure the door handle issue is an easy DIY, just buy the part and have some fun. You are eventually going to have to open up the door panel to replace a window regulator, so why not go ahead and practice??

I thought it had been made a sticky or reference article, but I didn't spend a lot of time looking, honestly.

Then, you have to click on the "covered" and "not covered", but the disclaimer fine print is not to be found on their site. As I have ranted before,
the covered/not covered is very well crafted, fine tooth, yin yang, boilerplate, imo.

If it works for some/many, great. When it does not "work" and appears to be feel good marketing item, for Biff&Buffy, then shame on BMW, imo.

this is exactly why I self insure whenever I can. always covered, no deductible, and never denied.

so much can be DIY to make it even cheaper and more rewarding. yes, the expensive items can be very costly under this plan, but then again, so if buying a new car. that is why i always buy used 3-5 yrs, and drive them as long as possible...
