4 quarts inside of 5k is pretty steep.
Many years ago (1989) Sabaru USA told me that 2 quarts per 800 miles was "within industry standards". Needless to say my Sabaru was sitting on a used dealers lot within a week!
As to usage in a 2001 3.0L X5. I find very little use between 7500 mile changes using Royal Purple Synthetic. The only time it moved a little was when I needed a VC gasket.

At least every x5 that is properly driven will have atleast 3 or 4 low oil lights come on.

I was about to thank you for the information, I continued to read further along and noticed that other owners are not burning up that much oil. If I notice even half a quart missing, I top it off. I would never let it get over 1 qt low. I am checking my oil level weekly, 2500 miles later and like I said before only 2mm low on the dipstick. I will see when I get to 5K.

Don't need or want your thanks. The reason I got the 4.4 was because of the 3.0 oil consumption. Good luck!

Killcrap, what would you say is "normal" consumption on the 3.0 between oil changes of 10K miles? Using synthetic oil of course.

The oil was changed less than 5k miles ago and I still have 3 green bars on the dash indicator. I'm wondering if the guy that changed the oil didn't put enough in when he changed it. Even if he put in 5 quarts it shouldn't take 4 more to fill it. I can understand maybe three if he only put in five and maybe it used a quart since then, but 4 quarts seems a little much. Any thoughts on this?

Where did you get the oil changed? If it was at a Jiffy lube or somewhere like that, he probably put in 5 quarts, you drove 5K miles and used one (which is common). Since the truck takes nearly 8 quarts to fill, then 5 in, minus 1 used = 4, then plus 4 to top off to full!

I have 3.0 x5 and i burn decent amount of oil. Kinda irks me the wrong way. I don't like how some people do and others don't that's what bothers me.

I take my work truck to Jiffy Lube, and they tell me beforehand the weight suggestion and if it'll take more than the standard 4 qts. in the $9.99 price so they can make sure to charge me more.

If you change your oil every 3000 miles you won't have this problem. But you will be spending a lot of money on oil.
