Saw an E30 that had catastrophically lost the flex disk. Not pretty and not cheap. The trans, shift linkage, driveshaft, etc. all had to be replaced after disk exploded.

Thanks. I will suggest guibo, cv joints and axles to the dealer. Will see if they are still willing to fix the damn thing.

Thanks for the replies. Local indie said they inspected drive shafts and drivetrain, and did not find anything wrong. Flex disc looked OK. They think the tranny is causing the problem and recommended rebuilding. Could a failing transmission be a potential cause of this issue? Due to the high costs involved of transmission work, I am going to get a second opinion.

OK... so here is the conclusion of my story. This didn't sound like a transmission issue as the previous shop claimed. So I went to BMW dealer for second opinion because I know they always shoot straight with me. Turns out they localized the vibration to the left front half axle. They just replaced the one side and car drives perfect now.

Just as I suspected. Glad it worked out for you.

I have the same issues....I even replaced the flex disk and nothing changed. I will be looking into this drivers side axle to be the culprit. Anyone know a place to get axles at a reasonable price? P.S how were they able to narrow it down to that? did the axle look damaged or could they move it around and tell it was damaged

I think they have some sort of a lift with rollers that they can drive the car and be able to inspect underneath while the car is at speed. I think they said that they visually localized it to that axle and possibly could tell that there was some play in it. It was due to an internal failure, supposedly. CV boots were intact.

Take my advice...go OEM on this one. When the original CV boot tore up, I replaced the whole half shaft with an aftermarket one. The vibration started shortly thereafter (within ~5000 miles). Took it to the dealer, thinking it was a bad transfer case bushing. They informed me that the new aftermarket half shaft was bad. Replaced it with an OEM and have been happy ever since.
