Disable Auto-Lock When Driving?

Having trouble with my doors auto locking at the beginning of a drive, and NOT auto-unlocking when the car is turned off.

When I first got this '01 X5 3.0i 5 spd manual SAV I assumed that the central locking system was designed to auto-lock all the doors (as mine does) when the vehicle first begins a drive through around 10 MPH. As I'm researching how to disable this feature, I can't find any reference in the owners manual or the Bentley manual that it is supposed to do this.

I don't have any use for this feature and would like to disable it.

Additionally, I also assume that since the central locking system auto-locks my doors just after the beginning of the first roll . . . then it should also auto-UNLOCK all the doors at some point . . . perhaps when the driver's door is opened, or when the ignition is turned off. Mine does NOT do this!!

Thus I have to press the center pedestal central locking switch (or double pull each required door handle) EVERY time I want to get out of the vehicle after driving.

Searched for a thread on this subject and didn't find one. Any ideas?

Go to the dealer since the feature can be de-programmed. There might be a charge to do this.

There is not a single BMW that auto-unlocks. The concept of "auto-locking" is foreign to most Germans and they don't use it.

Not really... The other German brands auto lock AND unlock... Nothing foreign about it.

I have gone through few e39's, e46's and now the e53 and none of them auto-unlock.

Auto locking is a dealer programable feature you can set for each key. I've never heard of a BMW with auto unlock. It's not a feature I would like. I like having full control of when the doors unlock. It's not like locking where I might forget.

Our E90 can be programmed by the owner to auto-lock and do it by specific ignition key. Which I like that control - there is a lot of benefit to that self personalization.

However after a while of having to unlock the doors when exiting the car or pulling the door handle twice - oy it's maddening and seems stupid you can't have it auto-unlock.

if you end up going to the dealer tell to whomever takes care of the car that you called a couple of days earlier and were told it would cost you $50, otherwise they will charge you 2 hours which is around $300. when I was there the guy was like "ooooohhhhhh.....it shouldn't take more than 2 hours to change the settings so that would cost you ONLY $300". Glad I saw the front desk and 3-4 girls being busy drinking a coffee. I told him that a blond voice over the phone said it would only cost $50. He had no choice but to do it for $50

Service writers = thieves...when they can get away with it! Always question what they are trying to sell you and the price. This is unless you absolutely, 100%, know and trust him/her. Sorry, back to the autolock. I haven't owned a BMW with both auto lock/unlock. Just lock and it's dealer programmable. If you want both features, you can simply add a module that has both features and you are good to go. Our Accord had keyless but no auto lock/unlock so I just added in an old alarm module and enabled the features.

Mercedes has auto lock and auto unlock when you turn off car the doors auto unlock. I used SSS progman to code the feature myself. Just as easy to turn on and off. You can try nav coder with a cable. Way cheaper than going to a dealer
