I was going to say the same thing about the silicone. I think they use a different sealant for that stuff. Isn't it like Sikaflex or something?

Can't think of the exact name of the stuff, but it is a non drying roll of tar like rubbery stuff some refer to as "dum dum". It is the same stuff used to instal windshields on old cars before the use of airbags.

Just a little update.

It has been raining a lot lately, and the door is still sealed...

It might not last, but for now, the heavy duty marine silicone is doing the job..

Cool

Hi Guys this is a common problem in X5 if you remove the door panel cover and the adehsive get disturbed. Only way to fix is to remove door panel and put some plastic behind to guide the water that come in from the weather strip to run back in door channel.
BMW and their shitty faults once more, how must a bimmer leak like this.. embarassing!

Yep guys! I'm experiencing the same problem too on the passenger side, there's always a messy water there like you can remove the mat on the floor and hold it-up, the mat is very heavy and you can see right away so much water is leaking from it. At 1st, I was a bit worried about this because it seems like it was coming from the thermostat, even I do not have any heater problem. But now, as I read the forum many of you seems having the same issue.

And I'm more confident now, this is coming from the rain instead! I'm gonna try to work on his tail.

Sure enough, some 10-15cm of the water barrier, was not glued properly to the door.. I do not know what caused this, cause the glue was there and everything, but it just did'nt stick...

I put on some black silicone, and glued it together...

Now, i just have to wait until it starts raining again, to see if the operation was successful..

Thanks for the help Weasel..

A little update.

Nearly one year later, and the silicone still holds.. No water coming in...

Ok so heres my problem.i kno for a fact my car is retaining water but the floor never gets wet.how do i kno its holding water?few things.1 it rained 2 nights ago.the next morning on my way to work i rolled down the driver side window.when i got there and rolled it back up i noticed that the entire window now become wet.2.in the past my radio would stop working only on rainy days.the music would stop and the MID would either stay orange or just turn off completly.it happened often enough to the point where the MID looks as if its constantly off.no audio playing either now.3.sometimes when i open my sunroof if i either turn too quickly or drive on hills water drips out onto either the center consol or onto my right shoulder.4.this past winter we had a decent amount of snow in NY.the snow would melt at some point into the day then freeze over night.in the morning i would walk out to the X and open the passanger side door.i cant describe this part very well but of u look at the dash and follow it to the door, theres a part where the dash curves inwards since it meets the door there.at that part u can see trails of dripping water that froze there.i also sometimes would get the frozen door locks problem(open door, the lock gets stuck on w.e. so when u close the door the lock is in the unlocked position so the door will hit the car, but not close).anyone have any soltuions to these problems?

The water gets soaked into the bottom of the carpet... the padding under there (molded to the carpet) absorbs water like a chamois sponge. You'd need to pull out the seats and prop up the carpet to dry under there.

It was just a quick response to the comment that your X is retaining water but the carpet seems dry. I've seen on numerous occasions where the top of the carpet seems bone dry however there is over an inch deep of standing water under the carpet. It eventually molds/smells, ruining the carpet... as well as causing numerous electrical problems from corrosion etc.

As for the source of the leak, you'd need to determine that by water testing with the hose to isolate where the water is coming from, then determine what the fix is.
