I had this issue in my 2003 x5 recently. It is definately a tranny problem as you said. I would firstly try to reset the trans box, or take it to the dealer to do (SW upgrade maybe). Check for any transmission fluid leaks under the car as well. It could be a number of different things like old tranny fluid, valve body needs cleaning and so on. The issue with mine (which is common apparently), was that the system was not being cooled properly due to a faulty valve in the coolant pipe - had it fixed and no more issues.

Good Luck!

that sounds very interesting, because when the weather is cold or cool i have no problems or when i first start up and get going there is no problems just after about 20-30 mints the of driven the lurking starts up when stopping. it just might be the very same problem as you.... was it an expensive fix

I had the same issue. The dealer just do a reset of something and everything works fine again. Should be a easy fix.

Yes definately sounds like what I had. What you will find is that as the car/tranny heats up, the coolant hose feeding the trans coolant box from the radiator is not working (blocked hose/faulty valve) so the trans fluid is heating up. A simple test is to read the temp of the tranny box cold and then after 30 mins - you will see the temp is above 100C (it should be in the 90's). This causes he tranny fluid to thin and then not function properly, hence the jerking motion.

The fix is relatively simple - replace/ remove the valve that feeds the coolant into the transmission system or unblock the hose - relatively cheap to fix. Just make sure the fluid has not leaked, otherwise you will have to replace the gasket.

Fyi I had my whole autobox reconditoned from a ZF specialist and works like a charm (but you dont need this to solve your issue).

Let me know how you get on.

Wow . . . 2 months without an issue? How do you do it? I haven't been able make it past 1 month without consecutive parts failures. Please share your secret so I can go 2 months without a parts failure too. I would sure be interested in doubling my time between parts failures.

Could be a dirty throttle control unit or a loose tranfer chain.

Thanks for the posts chaps.
How do you measure the temp of the transmission? Did you use an infrared thermometer and measure it outside, or a diagnostic cable and get it from a inbuilt sensor?

Cheers, Scott.
