They are Le Mans flares I purchased from Kelowna BMW in Canada, the flares were cheap compared to the rip off prices you pay in AUST but the freight was almost double the price of the flares thats what happens when you live on the bottom of the planet. Cheers

I have been receiving quite a load of PMs asking questions on this subject,so I thought it would be more practical to add information to the thread

Here goes ..FAQS
You dont loose any low/mid torque! Its a turbo car and doesnt need backpressure! The back pressure it already has in the Turbos VG is more than enough!
I would advice having a remap done , as the air flow is faster and the turbo spools up quicker, but not necessary

The sound is very discreet,no droning at all..pure smooth ,I6 but sounding more V8ish now and you dont hear so much the "knock sound" on the the rear mufflers
as the gases escape quicker,,just hear more "whooosh".Sounds less "diesel" at tickover and on acceleration ,it sounds v8ish ,hehehee.

Anyone, wanting to cut /drill into these mufflers,be warned, they are very hard stainless steel,so be prepared to break a few drills and circular saws!
The chamber inside the muffler has 2 perforated shields on either side with sound deadning material. They are very small, about 5 cms width!
The middle of the silencer, about 32 cms long , is completely hollow!Has the inlet opening from the pipe from the engine and then has an outlet pipe ,
whose tip resembles a machine gun silencer (see photo)that expels the gases out.So the gases coming from the engine hit the 2 perforated shields
and are silenced by the sound deadning material, consisting of a stainless mesh and acoustic wool fibre, before exiting through the outlet pipe
that is incorporated into the muffler (see photo).

The muffler looks restrictive ,but I was surprised at how quickly compressed air flows through it!!Even just breathing into into, the air comes out quickly!!
So,I would say that its not very restrictive and quite well designed.Overall the X5 3.0D -184/193 bhp ,exhaust system isnt very restrictive at all.
After turbo it has a straight through Kat,which splits into 2 exits pipes that go to rear mufflers...THATS IT!!!
Compare this to a 5 series E39 with same engine! This has 2 kats,2 middle silencers and then split into 1 rear very restrictive rear silencer (I know..I cut one open!)

Niiiice!
I'm having a hard time deciding wether I want to go straight pipe instead of the rear silencers, or do what you did there.
The sound of a straight piped turbodiesel isn't as loud as one would think either, as the turbo kills a lot of noise. I had straight pipe exhaust on my E34 525tds (no cat, no mufflers), and it wasn't annoyingly loud. Even the neighbors told me it was ok. Inside, there was hardly any exhaust noise at all.

I might try doing what you did first. And if I feel like it's too silent, I'll go straight piped.

Whatever you decide ,you will need to buy the clamping exhaust collars that attach the exhaust to the rear silencers.Mine didnt have these ,so i had to cut and get some, eventhough on REALOEM it shows it having them
Run the car without rear silencers ,first and see..Its great sound ,,you will love it,not loud at all
