Service light AMBER

Hi everyone,

I just bought a 2001 X5 - 3.0 with 118 000 km with no warranty. I love everything about this car. My question is the service amber light just came on. I would like to know if I take it in to the stealer - what should I expect them to do /replace /inspect before they reset the service light. and how much will this cost me.

First off, :welcome: to X5world.

Regarding what needs to be done, it depends on whether it is an "oil service" or an "inspection service" It should say in the dash which one you are due for.

Here is an article that tells you what is performed for either one of these - http://www.xoutpost.com/showarticle-175.html As you can see, a lot of these are things that you can do on your own if you have some basic mechanical abilities. I too am out of warranty and I basically do all of the routine service myself.

Also, here's an article that tells you how to reset your service lights on your own, should you opt to go the DIY route - http://www.xoutpost.com/showarticle-132.html

and again, welcome!!!

I did replace the oil myself and reset the light, all green appeared again. I was excited and all. But now it's only one green left after 2 weeks of driving. I brought it to the dealer and the put my key in the darn tool and the computer read with 5 greens, and I ask them why? They did not tell me why? They said: "I don't know".

That's the first I've heard of that happening.

What year is your X5?

it's 2003 engine 4.4i. I replaced the oil again after 600 driving. Since it's snow here, I changed the oil to grade Extended Full synthetic Mobil 5-30w 7 1/2 quarts. The car seems startup better with the cold temp. The old oil that I drain out was Extended Full Synthetic 10-30w, I guess it would not hurt the car with a little thicker, but after reading the website and dealer also suggest with 5-30w. But after changed the oil again tonight, the darn light with 1 green left still there. This sucks! Here is the instruction from other website that I got, which instructs how to reset the light. I don't this instruction did mess up my car or not.

BMW 2001 to current
Ignition Off (Position 0)
Press and Hold the trip odometer button while turning key to position 1 (ACCESSORY)
Keep the button depressed (about 5 secs.) until you see "Oil Service" or "Inspection" with "Reset" or "Re" in the display*

Press the button again and hold for approx. 5 secs. until "Reset" or "Re" flashes

While the display is flashing, briefly press the button again to reset the Service Interval. After the display has shown the new interval you should see "END SIA" for about 2 seconds
Note: that if the "Reset" or "Re" does not flash, then you have not met the minimum consumption level and cannot reset

*Note: On vehicles with "High" cluster, you will also see the amount of fuel (in litres) remaining until next service

One thing I know when you are trying to reset the oil light or inspection light, keep your driver side door open and follow the car door sound "ding" ...."ding".. each ding is one sec I suppose, that's how I keep track of 5 sec count.

The system will only let you reset the lights when the oil service or inspection service are due. If it's still showing one green bar then you may have to wait until that is gone before trying the reset again.

The system doesn't detect what kind of oil you have in the vehicle or the quality. It's based on how much fuel has been consumed by the engine (fuel flow meter) since the last reset.

Thank you UCREWX5 for the very helpful link. So I assumed that the BMW Service Schedule is listed in Miles and not kilometers which means I have 75000 miles on my car. So I am due for an oil change. Thanks!
