A few words of wisdom...

I got into a protracted p!ssing match with a Service Manager who refused to replace my rotors (on an E39 M5) under the 3/36K Full Maintenance Protection program because I had installed aftermarket pads. The ironic thing was, I had been in a pinch for time and I paid the dealership to install the pads. They took my money and said nothing about voiding the full maintenance coverage. Doesn't matter: he stood firm, and I promptly took my business elsewhere.

In the future (as I'm pondering the RedStuff for my 4.8) I will re-install the factory pads should my rotors measure below spec. And then the dealer will have no reason to deny my claim.

I should say this was an extreme case, at (what I found out later to be) a corporate store. I've had many more dealers look the other was on such things, but it is a potential risk.

Given the volume of brake dust deposits in my short 600 miles of ownership, I most certainly will go aftermarket. As I understand it, RedStuff is the only option at present. I've had great success with Mintex Red Box and Axxis Deluxe Plus in the past.

Thanks for the welcome, LMB! I spent the last five + years on m5board-dot-com, until a growing family forced more utilitarian transport. Good thing I didn't have to give up much of the Sport!

BTW, I ordered a set of Red Stuff from AJ-USA today. Thanks, LVR, for the heads-up on dust-less-(than-stock) pads. As far as I can tell, this is the only offering for the 4.6/4.8 D920 pad shape.

Where did you buy them from in Australia (I'm in Cairns), and do you have a part number / price?
Thanks
I sent an email to ebc brakes in new zealand and they advised their nearest outlet.... this is their email address. [email protected]

The parts themselves are RED STUFF CERAMIC to suit 4.6 or 4.8. I have deleted the email that had the part numbers.

Sorry for the delay in replying

My Pleasure! welcome to the board!

NOTE: the EBC rear pads are the same model number for all 3.0 and 4.8 X5's, which means that the Mintex/Axxis should be ok if you really really want to stay with them.

Actually, I already purchased a set for all four corners of the EBC Red Stuff--I want to have the same friction properties all around! I'll update your Red Stuff post when I have a few miles under my belt.

Fiscally, that's unfortunate, b/c I still have a set of Axxis Deluxe Plus rears in my garage (which fits not only all E53s, but also E38s and E39 M5 rears). Oh well, I'm sure I'll find takers for all my various E39 stuff left over.

I'm not at all opposed to giving EBC a try. It's just that I only had prior history with Mintex/Axxis. I sincerely doubt I'll be testing the brakes on my 4.8 like I did on the M5 (~3500 track miles in nearly six years).
